  • Who has more heterosexual partners, on average?
     OP - April 05, 2010, 03:00 PM

Let's see what everyone thinks about this.

I added no "both the same" answer on purpose, so you are forced to pick either choice even in case you  believe the difference is infinitesimal.

I think it depends on what part of the bell curve your look at. An average "alpha" male may have far more sexual partners than your average "alpha female" (??). But I think the male sex has far more virgin losers than females. I think sexual 'access' for males tends to be like a pyramid with a whole lot of loosers and a few select males who dominate completely. For women I think it's more equitable, men are so horny they will have a lot lower standards and will 'hit on' women a lot more, which usually translates to even an average looking girl having a far large selection of males constantly approaching her to select from. An average looking male probably does not get hit on much at all.

Anyways, that's just my crackpot theory. Could be totally wrong.

For every male that's sleeping with a female, there's a female that's also slept with a male.  So common sense would demand the answer "both the same."

    You're almost right.
    The real answer is "females".

You forgot to take into consideration m/f birth ratio, which is slightly towards the m.

    It's not.

You are mistaken because the sex ratio of living people in western countries is towards the f.
That's only because females live longer, and the birth rate is low in those countries.

All over the world the natural sex ratio at birth is towards the m, in every country.
That means that, in a big enough geographic zone, for a long enough span of time, the number of males that have ever lived there is higher than the number of females that have lived there.

So the average number of heterosexual partners is higher for females than for males.

    Who has more homosexual partners?

I have never found good statistics about that.

And unlike heterosexual partners, it cannot easily be solved with math.

No, that doesn't work.  You have to look purely at the ratio in age groups which are sexually active, and females outnumber males in all age groups other than immediately after birth.  Babies don't have sex, so ......I win.

Then look at the ratio of humans that reach sexual maturity.
    It's still towards the m.

Where are you getting your figures from?  Huh?  Any statistics I've ever seen say its towards the female in every age group apart from immediately after birth.

    Found it.

Here you can find the interpolated/projected data from the United Nations, based on their various sources:

    http://esa.un.org/unpp/index.asp?panel=2

To check the ratio for a country, choose the first option "population by five-year age group and sex", and choose some countries.
Below, restrict the year range to like... 2005-2010

Then check the numbers for each countries for the 15-19 age group and you'll see it towards the m basically everywhere (i've yet to find a country that is towards the f)

On a global basis he seems to be.  I was probably looking at stats that dealt with EU demographics.  From your link....

    Quote
In much of Europe, for example, there are approximately 105 women per 100 men, resulting in a sex ratio of 1.05.

Even if we look at just Europe, you don't have to take into consideration the sex ratio of the human beings past fertility age that are currently alive.
Because if you do that, you are not taking into consideration the deceased ones.

Example, let's take a tiny fictional population of creatures:

At moment t0, the population is empty.

At moment t1, 1000 males appear, and 100 females appear.
    Each male sexes one female.
The m/f population ratio is 10.
The avg partners of each male is 1.
The avg partners of each female is 10.

At moment t2, 990 males die.
    No more sex happens.
The m/f population ratio is now 0.1
The avg partners of each male is still 1.
The avg partners of each female is still 10.

The formula to calculate the average partners for a population over a given span of time is:
[number of heterosexual relations that happened during the time span] / [number of individuals of a given sex that ENTERED the population during that time span]

Your theory is correct. Partially this is based on the fact that only a small number of males is highly active in hitting on females, and that females do not generally hit on males.  The beta males need not be "virgin losers" to skew the stats down, they need merely not actively hit on lots of women - but since they don't get hit on by females, they get less action.
