    A bit of a shitty selection; I prefer a mixture of allowing people to achieve their full potential whilst helping those who need help because of no fault of their own.

    Well thats kind of a simplistic way of looking at it. No country on earth is purely any of these. Except Bangladesh and the Congo I guess - those are pure survival of the fittest capitalistic societies. ROFL

    yeah, but even then I would call them cronie capitalist - the same sort of cronie capitalism that resulted in the former Malaysian prime minister to blame 'teh juice' for the currency to fall through the flaw.

    These selections are very simplistic for a reason. There is a plethora of different selections I could put down, but there would simply be too many choices. I did my best to narrow them all down to two simple choices.

    Capitalism in a broad sense, can be described by the first selection. The second one is more of a socialist view.

    I'm kind of a middle of the road. i.e

    1) Everyone gets their basic needs met, i.e food, shelter, health care.
    2) Those who produce more value have all the opportunities to get as wealthy as they want.

    Thats how I see it too. But only if my personal wealth isn't touched to get #2 done (and I'm not talking about Taxes).

    For the most part, Capitalism, at least the way it's here in America is very middle of the road; despite what MM says.

    I think in an economy where there is a limit for how much money people can make, there will be very little progress.

    For example, a lot of progress that happens is the result of enterpreneurs who come up with ideas to do things faster, cheaper, or with a better quality. As a result the country as a whole benefits from the service that the enterpreneurs come up with. (For example: google provides immense benefits to everyone, same goes for twitter,  Skype, etc).

    Without this incentive, people won't come up with ideas to improve the society and things will stay where they are, or go downhill.

    Err....kinda but not really. Just want to turn this into a good discussion. And Canada is more socialist that America (where America needs to be frankly) but by no means is it considered a commie country.

    Last year they took off 30%+ in taxes from my income. This better be a fucking socialist country!

    the answers are loaded from the start there are so many shades of grey between those two positions. Personally I think something based on the Keynesian model would be the fairest especially at a global level.
    According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'

    The Scandinavian Model is the best. They have very advanced economies with positive account balances whilst providing a comprehensive social safety net.
    But being a hypocrite and sell out who can't wait to get a beemer, I have to admit I'm not sure I would wanna live under such a big tax burden.

    I guess my ideal country is one that has the European level of services and the American level of taxation !! ATM, Canada is the closest you can get to that.

    I'm afraid that's not true Tommy. Capitalism doesn't guarantee equality of opportunity. The only that can be achieved is by socialism or at least by enforcing a 100% inheritance tax.

    Sweden has withstood the recent economic crisis better than most countries. They still have a positive account balance and they have a real safety net.

    Nothing to do with the economic model but a quick response to the crisis by cutting out the bad debt from the banks before it spread, and then created a 'bad debt bank' backed by the government; they moved quickly and it stopped the problem from spreading to the whole of the economy - nothing to do with left versus right, just a quick response to a crisis where as the yanks sat around with their collective finger up their ass.

    This is not my area. But I like the Nordic (Sweden, etc) model of social democracy where the economy is sort of free and people can make their own wealth, but at the same time, high taxes are implemented to provide universal services - healthcare, education, etc. I'm not sure if this is exactly right, please correct me if not, but this is just what I gathered from my very limited knowledge on this sort of thing.
