    there's something about doing it in darkness and having a shower straight afterwards from what i remember

    Venial, eternal, and mortal sins aren't an Islamic concept. Orthodox Christianity has a whole classification system that goes beyond "major" and "minor."

    If one apostatizes, one is held responsible for all missed fara'id as well as all sins committed during the length of the apostasy. So you'd have all those prayers to make up, fasting, and blah blah, plus the burden of all that delicious bacon on your soul.

    Not in the Jafari school.  Some debate exists over shellfish and prawns in the Hanafi school.  The position of caution is that they are not halal because the desert Arabs didn't know of them and they may not be covered by the term 'fish'.  I have actually sat in a room while Hanafi teachers and students of knowledge discussed this issue very feverishly as though their life depended on it.   One even made the argument that there is a difference in halalness between a prawn and a shrimp, while another said they should both be avoided because 1400 years ago, a bunch of camel traders didn't know the difference between them.
