  • Did religion/prophets use Hypnosis?
     OP - April 07, 2010, 04:26 PM

In many places, religious people are usually labeled by unbelivers or by athiests as being deluded. But has anyone mentioned "Hypnosis"? I mean could, Jesus (if he existed) or Mo have mastered hypnosis and used it to make people follow them?

I am starting to look at my Muslim friends, especially the ones who refuse to engage with me in a questioning dialouge, as hypnotized people who were told or made to never question faith.

Just a thought.... What say you guys?

Not hypnosis but a great many psychological techniques - have a look at the vids on the psychology of religion:

I doubt it's hypnosis, it's just primitive minds centuries ago tricked into believing things easily, and then pass it on by indoctrination. The excessive drilling of ideas into a child's mind are hard to overcome.

And what Hassan posted, that series is brilliant.

Repetition and acts of compulsory group/individual worship that constantly affirm ones duty and obligation and faith are a big part of Islam.

Also separating one off from contrary views and peer group pressure.

Muhammad used a lot of allusions to previous stories that were respected/admired/amazed and tagged his own bits on to them - i.e. "You know this is true well this is true also!"

So, Mo and Jesus were like Derren Brown, only more treacherous?

Thanks hass... I just watched part 1 and it is good. Will watch the rest later.

But I still think that there are people who have a very strong convincing powers who can talk people into doing things. So maybe some how, our one and only "Mo" had that gift and used it on his first followers, especially "Abobaker" who was known to say to people who tell him that the prophet said so and so, the following: "If Mohamed said it, then it is true"!

I am not sure if I can call that hypnosis, though!

There are definitely charismatic characters that seem to naturally draw people to them and have a natural ability to manipulate people psychologically.
