  • Slaves of Allah?
     OP - April 09, 2010, 06:56 AM

Is there any other god that constantly tell and remind his followers that they are his slaves, other than Allah? Also, In Islam, the names: Abdullah, Abdulhamid, Abdulrahman, Abdulsalam... etc, are also present.

As you all know, ABDUL= Slave/Servant

When I was a Muslim it always bothered me that I have to worship a god that constantly belittles and degrades me.

Did any one here thought the same about this?  Huh?

Thats the one thing I can't work out about Islam and Arab culture when compared to Judaism/Christianity where the names have alot nicer, more spiritual meaning; take my name which is Matthew which means "Gift of God", my sisters name is Erin which means "Ireland" and my brother is Benjamin which means "son of my right hand" - so I guess given the state of the Islamic world, names definitely have an impact on how people behave.

Yeah they have names like abdunabi and abdurasool in Egypt and yes they are haram but the ordinary Egyptians don't really care. btw some Christians have abdulmaseeh (slave of the messiah).

actually ..3abd means slave.. the ul part is just like ' of ' or ' the'..
blacks in arabic are called 3abeed... plural for 3abd.. says alot on it own i think..
even thou muslims recognize ' prophets' like yahya - john or yunus - jonah..harun -araon..yaqub -jacob.. and so on ..they never consider naming their child these ... not submissive enough..
i know alot of arab muslims that actually want a horrible life.. because they beleive they will get some extra goodies in the afterlife.. so they sabotage existence from the start .. with a name slave..

    ‘Abd (عبد)
servant, worshipper, slave. Muslims consider themselves servants and slaves of God. Common Muslim names such as Abdullah (Servant of God), Abdul-Malik (Slave of the King), Abdur-Rahmān (Slave of the most Beneficent), Abdus-Salām (Slave of Peace), all refer to names of Allah.

I don't know - I have only heard it in Egypt - but that doesn't mean other Christian Arabs don't use it.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_(name)

    Quote
Matthew (pronounced /ˈmæθjuː/) is the standard English for the Hebrew Bible name Μαθθαιος[1], a Koine Greek transliteration of the Aramaic diminutive מתי (Mattay, Maty). From Latin Matthæus, the English spelling Matthew comes directly from the French Matthieu (earlier Matheu). Ultimately derived from the Hebrew name מתתיהו (Matatyahu, Mattathias) or מתיתיהו (Matityahu, Mattithiah), Matthew means "gift of YHWH". The Hebrew name is also spelled מתניהו (Matanyahu, Mattaniah). Related names include נתניהו (Netanyahu, Nethaniah), and with swapped syllables יהונתן (Yehonatan, Jonathan).

A common name in the West, it is traditionally spelled "Matthew" in English, but sometimes "Mathew", and even as the Muslim name Mathyu. Matt is the most common hypocoristic form of the name in English. "Matthew" can also be a middle name, and the English surnames Matthew, Matthews, Mathis, Mathewson, and Mattison are among many family names derived from it.

The name "Matthew" has historically been distinguished from the related but less common (in English) name Matthias, and is clearly distinguished in most other European languages.

Many names used by those in the west have their origins in the bible which therefore has their origins in Hebrew.

The abrahamic faiths and the middle eastern pagan faiths both have even names where they call themselves with pride the servants of their gods. The ancient greeks at one time also had that belief. I don't understand it, why be a slave of your god?

It is not the way you live your life that is important, it is how well you enjoy it that matters.

because religion is about giving up your own desires, thoughts, moral attitudes, etc and replacing them with < insert Abrahamic religion>.  The best analogy that mankind has to that is slavery.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

I wouldn't call it a Abrahamic tradition given that no such blind following exists in Judaism; in fact there are numerous examples outlined by Rabbi Jonathan Sacks where man 'wrestles' with God. Its pretty much an Islamic thing with this fetish over being a slave to Allah.

It goes to show that Islam, like Christianity and most of the rest of the major religions, was a product of slave-based society.

Or just re-enforces what the Tanach describes the Arabs as in Gensis 16:11-12

11 "And an angel of Hashem said to her, "Behold, you will conceive, and give birth to a son; you shall name him Ishmael, for Hashem has heard your prayer."

12 "And he shall be a wild-ass of a man; his hand against everyone, and everyone's hand against him; and over all his brothers shall he dwell"

Which describes the Arab Islamic mind set quite well given the way Muslims behave - thousands of years before the rise of Islam a lone writer could see what an uncivilised cunt would rise forth out of the primordial ooze of Beduin tribes.

Still plodding my way through the books; if I do convert (98.9% likelihood), it'll be reform or reconstructionist Judaism.

I don't know if you've mentioned this anywhere previously and apologies if you have, but why do you think reform judaism is the complete and utter truth about the cosmos? (even allowing for the 1.1% of uncertainty Smiley)
