I slept at 6:30 am and just woke up. I turned the TV on and Dimbleby and Paxman are still on. Did they have no sleep?  wacko

They look - and feel - human.
Some are programmed to believe they are human.
    There are many copies.
    And they have a plan.

OK, so what happens if they fail to form a coalition?

    We have a re-election.

Does the coalition also have to have 326 seats to form a government?
  • Re: The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?

No, I think they just need to have more seats than the total of all the other parties seats added up

Which would indeed have to be at least 326 seats. We could have a minority government though - it's happened on a few occasions.

Ah yes, total seats are 650 so 650/2+1=326.  It was a long night last night bcos of that election special on BBC, got to bed at 4am and was up at 8am  bedtime2

Conservatives have won the election, really. But they didn't get the majority of seats. That means it's difficult to pass all the laws they would like to pass because each law needs over 50% of MP votes to pass it. With a majority, they could pass every single law they wanted to pass without a worry, as long as the party whips keep all their members in line, which shouldn't be too hard at the beginning of a new government. But in this case they don't have a majority. If they fail to form a coalition, Conservatives form a minority government and David Cameron is our new Prime Minister.

Lib Dems might support Conservatives in forming a minority government.

Anybody know how much the Cons are going to rise taxes by?

Con+LibDem would form a majority government. There'd be no point in a coalition that was still a minority. And what makes you think Conservatives are going to raise taxes? I haven't read their manifesto so I'm not 100% sure but I would assume they're going to cut taxes, especially the inheritance tax lol.

Not necessarily, as labour could instead form a coalition with them and others, then either Gordon Brown or probably David Milliband will become our next primeminister.

I meant LibDems would be supportive of them forming a minority government. That's the impression I got anyway. Could be wrong though.

Let's look at it this way, a clear majority of the voters voted for left-wing parties.

    Tories 36.1% + UKIP 3.1% + BNP 1.9% = 41.1%
    Labour 29% + LibDems 23% + Greens 1% = 53%

In fact the BNP is the most protectionist of all parties so it might not be accurate to describe it as right-wing.

Perhaps, a similar argument is used to claim the Nazis were a leftist party.

Yes, I've thought of it that way too. Clegg could use that argument to justify teaming up with Labour. I got a lot of respect for Clegg for going to the Conservatives first because it would seem from the results that that is what the people want. But I think it would be equally democratically respectable if Clegg were to team up with Labour because Lib Dems have got more in common with Labour than with Conservatives.

I wouldn't group Tories with the other two. They're not in the same league.

A Con-Lib coalition would be funny. LD's would tear themselves apart in the process and the govt would be so weak after the cuts that Labour would swing back into power in around in a year or so. At this rate I'd give it 18months before the civil unrest begins.

I would like to think Libs are more pragmatic about our debt, and outsde of the pre-election rhetoric, would be sensible when they are actually sharing hold of the reigns of power

Gordon Brown should resign. Labour was not humiliated in a landslide, but they were defeated. Let the Tories and Libs get on with the harsh cuts and tough decisions in the next parliament, Labour get a new leader, replenish their front bench, rejuvenate themselves, become focussed, lean and mean, become an effective opposition, and the situation is recoverable for the next election in terms of getting back to power. This could be the making of the next incarnation of Labour.

From what I hear, the Lib Dems are likely to form a government with Labour, but Clegg has to pay lip service to his promise that he'll talk to whoever wins more seats.

If the LibDems form a coalition without electoral reform then I'm sure most of his supporters will feel cheated. The coalition wont last long either. I hope he's smart about this.

This is what I've been thinking. I just can't see a Lib-Con coalition working.

Agreed. I don't think voters will forgive Nick if he sells out by giving up proportional represention.

What choice does he have if Conservative & Labour dont agree to these demands, in fact I doubt they will.

Dont forget Camerons own party wont forgive him if he offers it, because loads of their mp's will be out of a job at the next election.  In turn he will also be out of a job.  Afaik 75% of his party will need to agree to whatever Cameron/Brown put on the table, and that aint gonna happen with PR.  Electoral reform I think is the best they can hope for.

Isn't Labour already offering reform? I swear I saw it on the news, cant remember where though.

They will both offer it, but what does reform mean?  More ballot papers at the next election?  A few boundaries changed?  Its a very broad term.  They havent specifically said PR on purpose, because thats a huge leap.

Labour stated they want the AV system before the election happened (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/8492622.stm)

According to this site (http://www.channel4.com/news/articles/politics/domestic_politics/electoral+reform+to+emerge+from+hung+parliament/3639787), the LibDems manifesto states that STV is their preferred system.
