  • The 2010 UK election - who will you vote for?
     OP - April 09, 2010, 09:08 PM

The UK election is less than a month away, and I'm curious about how this forum will be voting. I'm pretty hyped since this is the first general election I'll be able to vote in - I'm going for the Liberal Democrats, but the way things are looking now, it seems David Cameron will be the next PM. A scary prospect. There's hope for a hung parliament though, at least. I can't wait for the debates - I'm hoping Nick Clegg will be able to capitalise and gain some momentum.

I'm in Canada so i can't vote here in the UK. I'm not sure what many of those parties believe, except the stupid BNP.

Not sure - probably Lib Dems because I like Nick Clegg and Evan Harris.

Whats the difference between the Liberal Democrats and the Labour party in the UK?

I can't vote either now that I no longer live on the UK side of the border, but if I were in the North still I would vote SDLP.

One is a bigger pile of shit than the other. On the bright side, Lib Dems don't have a silly war on drugs policy.

Well traditionally the Lib Dems were somewhere between the left (Labour) and the right (Conservative) but these days all the boundaries are blurred.

I tend to vote for people/issues rather than have a fixed political stance.

I like some of the things Nick Clegg says (and he is a closet Atheist) and Evan Harris was the only mainstream politician who joined us at the One Law for All rally in Hyde Park  Afro

So uninspirational. So done with Labour. But Cameron is so, meh. Nothing about him inspires me at all, nothing.

They are all going to spend the next parliament taking us out of the recession. Who do you trust more to do that? I don't know. I haven't decided yet. I feel the Conservatives will get into power by default, but not by as big a margin as everyone was expecting say 12 months ago.

I think if Labour avoid any kind of landslide against them (and it looks like they will), there is a chance that they can just spend one parliament out of power. Cameron and the Conservatives do not inspire confidence.

Yeah Hass, on balance I might just end up voting Liberal Democrats. But I haven't decided for sure yet.

If the Tories ever give Boris Johnson the leadership I'm voting for them though  Grin

Who do I trust more to do that? None of the political parties, but the best man for job of chancellor is Vince Cable, so that is why I am gunning for a hung parliament, so that we have the possibility of Vince Cable in number 11

He's openly atheist.  When he was interviewed by the BBC and asked whether he believed in God, he answered... "no".

I'm with you on the drug policy but do you honestly think that if Clegg (or Charles Kennedy for that matter) was PM the UK wouldn't have gone to both wars?
I don't think so myself. If Clegg had received the call from Bush, it's likely he would've had acted the same way as Blair did.

No, I don't think so, actually and I don't think the Labour Govt would have if it wasn't for Blair himself and the fact he was in such a strong position.

Cheetah, are Irish citizens residing in the UK eligible to vote in UK general election? or are you a British citizen/dual citizen?

Irish citizens are eligible to vote in UK elections if they live in the UK, and vice versa.  I'm not sure why - presumably some deal that was done way back in 1921 or whenever.  I'm an Irish citizen only, no dual citizenship.

It's not about buddies, the US is the UK's most important ally. One of the reasons why France didn't go to the Iraq War is that France's best ally is not the US but arguably Germany.

Thats weird, so I assume there are a different set of laws applicable to residents of these 2 streets that only a couple of miles separate?  If you go to a shop in the middle, do in inhabitants of these 2 streets have different amounts to pay because of the different vat rates?

Just wondering, what are the Lib Dems offering that Labour or Conservatives aren't? I just noticed a lot of youth (on another forum, at least) liked the Lib Dems and hated Labour or Conservatives, but what makes them so different?

To be honest, I am not a fan of either Labour or Conservatives, but I'd lean towards Conservatives just because at the moment I want anyone other than Labour (well, not anyone, not BNP). Thing is, I don't know enough about the UK parties to really know which party I would prefer; but both Labour and Torries didn't seem too different from what I read or heard.

rather than refusing to vote, I think the best thing is to go and spoil you ballot paper.  At least then you have registered & utilised your right to vote - something that people have fought for in the past, and are still dying for, in many countries.
