    Yes but what exactly are you protesting against? What is it you don't like and want to see changed that voting for any particular party will not solve?

    I'd like Switzerland's system of being able to call a referendum whenever the public wants to be implemented. Out government is far too power hungry to ever that happen though.

    Really? I didn't feel they are looking at it the right way. They just seem to be throwing money at the problem rather than actually tackling it. Plus the tax relief they are offering isn't much at all.

    What I would like to see changed is the system itself. It's unreasonable to expect that an accomplice (political parties) can do that.

    My issue has never been whether I should abstain, but what I would do if placed in a situation where a party like the BNP might get elected. Furthermore, I feel abstention should go hand in hand with grass roots activism where possible but this becomes more difficult as you get older with the 9-5 grind, responsibility for taking care of your family, etc. The real battle for me is trying to stay focused and involved with so many important causes to consider and balancing them against my day to day responsibilities.

    Do you really need to ask me what's wrong with the current socio-economic system?

    Let me give you an example.
     
    Last year company I work for sacked 800 employees in order to cut costs and to ensure profitability for its shareholders.
    The sacking was carried out in a most despicable way imaginable with literally two hour notice, extremely poor communication and no redundancy pay.

    That's pretty bad. I know a corporation that put around two-thirds of their employees on an "at risk" list with the intention of sacking around 10% of the workforce. They were all sent letters, then divided into groups for a "consultancy period" of three months during which they had to agree upon the criterion by which they would be scored. The person who scored lowest in each group was made redundant. This process was pointless because the management already knew in most cases who they wanted to get rid of, and in any case the scoring was kept secret. The company had literally billions stored up in cash assets but used them to buy vulnerable competition during the crisis so that they'd come out with even more market share, rather than retain their staff - ultimately the strength of the corporation will always trump the interests of expendable assets such as workers.

    Socialism must be enforced. It can't just occur. And in order to enforce it a strong state must exist.

    A completely new paradigm is needed.
    Modern "left" in the West has all but given up on pursuing a truly egalitarian emancipatory society by accepting that capitalism is now the only game in town.

    Churchill's criticism of socialism is valid insofar it is applied to the 20th century interpretation.
    Problem is that he apparently sees no connection between capitalism and totalitarianism. Capitalism is inherently violent and anti-freedom but its violence is more subtle.

    Gordon Brown is all right as far as prime ministers go. If this was a marginal Lab constituency or something I might consider a vote. Cholera to keep the plague out.


    But we don't live in a democracy and I ain't gonna vote for any of them, because none of them truly represent our interests. This isn't a democracy and the whole popularity contest deserves to be boycotted. Every single party is committed to more cuts than Thatcher's. I'm not going to choose any poison this spring except for the cider and drugs I ingest.

    I agree. As of late he's been sensationalist and needlessly alarmist. He also does come across as a bigot. Although I think it's unfair to judge him based on one video. He's not anti-Muslim as much as he's anti-religion. He has many videos criticizing Catholicism and the god of the bible.

    I've watched a few of his vids; I feel you really need to listen to him for about 10 minutes to understand what he is about. Also, his style is just SO AWFUL. I mean, really. Overly rehearsed, mechanical and above all, extremely cocky. I imagine he wouldn't last 10 minutes in a debate as he doesn't seem the type who can think on his feet.

    He has a book out too; another one who is cashing in on Atheism, it seems.

    I can't disagree with you. His style is cocky and this is what I like about him. It's one of those things you either love or hate.

    BTW, what's wrong with cashing in on atheism? you do realize almost every Muslim or religious intellectual is cashing in on religion too?

    That's a fair point. I'm not particularly keen on the rafts of Muslim scholars making $$$ from books/lectures etc. I have personal experience with Muslim scholars demanding ridiculous amounts of money for lectures; it s really disheartening.

    Well news correspondents were going on about how good the leaders were at smiling in front of the camera and how good their jokes are. This isn't far from the criteria the ordinary person follows when deciding who to vote for. It's one huge popularity/unpopularity contest. Politics is becoming more and more showbiz. What a disgrace.

    Meanwhile, the media is scaring us with just how much of a disaster a hung parliament would result in. The Sun said it would lead to corruption.  Cheesy

    I still have not decided.

    I am so underwhelmed by them all. Not taken in by the Nick Clegg hype. Cameron is just meh. Labour are an exhausted party and Brown has no temperament for leadership of the UK anymore.

    A parliament in opposition might be timely for the Labour Party. If they can get their shit together, rejuvenate, let the Tories take the licks for the next four years of harsh measures to pay off the debt, it might be a good thing.

    In other words, I don't have a clue. Still.
