    Here's a prediction. The Liberal Democrats will be wiped out in the next election. They are going to take big losses. Alot of left of centre people will feel betrayed because of this coalition. Labour will pick up their votes and that will put them halfway to regaining power next election.

    Deputy PM is largely an ornamental position - it's not like a vice-presidency in the US, so Nick wouldn't take over if Cameron was ever away. It does give him a good deal of credibility though.

    I am one of them, and Ive forgotton it already.  He did the best he could considering the circumstances.

    Neither party were offering PR, nor did I expect them to, given that it would be akin to shooting themselves in the foot.

    Apparently Labour put considerably less on the table that the Tories did (due to in-fighting I hear but also because they were in a weaker position)

    I voted Lib Dems but am actually against PR.

    It results in hung parliaments. The country benefits from strong government with am majority so that it can make decisions.

    The other problem with PR is that it will give groups like the BNP a solid voice, and a bargaining hand (just like LibDems got)

    I don't think they had much of a choice tbh. Give them some credit. It's not like they won the election. They can only bargain for so much.

    That is NO reason to not want PR. Just because you don't like their policies doesn't mean everyone else feels the same way. Everyone has a right to have their voices heard if they had enough votes.

    That being said, PR usually has a cutoff point to keep the very small parties out.

    No it won't, that's just scare tactics you've been fed by opponents of PR.  We've had STV here for donkeys years and Sinn Fein, despite having a far more widespread base than the BNP have ever had, never were allowed bargaining power until the IRA gave up violence.  All it takes to marginalise extremists is for the politicians of all the main parties to show some integrity and not negotiate with them.

    And if you don't trust them to have that minimum of integrity then it hardly matters what voting system you use, does it?

    Coalition governments aren't necessarily weak, neither are single governments necessarily strong. Give it a chance Wink It may work or it may not. Plenty of coalition governments have worked in the past. At least with a coalition government, parties are forced to work together. I think Clegg is smart enough to allow this to work (at least I hope). Coalition governments can also allow opposition to controversial bills.

    After reading comments by many people on different forums, I'm surprised to find that so many PR (STV) supporters are opposed to this coalition. If you want STV, then you should be prepared for things like this happening. STV requires compromises, including ones you may not like. I'm also glad to see there are still many who are supportive of this coalition.

    I'm watching the BBC news atm. I love how they constantly announce their surprise whenever Clegg and Cameron are walking together rather calmly and happily Cheesy

    I like some of the policies that have been agreed on so far. I hope this coalition works out, otherwise you can say bye bye to PR (for now).
