Skip to 3:36 and watch till 3:40. Why the hell do many do that? Even in my University prayer room, some people read Qur'an like that? Fuck it makes them look brainwashed.

Its probably something to do with breaking or alleviating the utter arid monotony of reciting, repeating, ad infinitum, language that you don't even understand and is probably an involuntary motion that the body goes through when faced with this torment. Also the rhythm helps with it in some way.

I suppose rote learning does that, sort of involuntary, while one is forcing the mind to concentrate intensely so that it can memorize Qur'an while sitting still for long periods of time.

For some it's probably boredom, for others it seems like they do it because they think they're supposed to do it - a lot like livestock.

Reminds me of the superstitious parrot experiment, where it developed strange affectations whenever it wanted food. This was because it may have been doing something once when food was presented, and it believed it was linked to getting food. After a while it began to do something resembling a tribal dance, no different from humans.

it's just a bad habit they do when trying to memorize something, it's supposed to keep the brain working and avoid being bored. It's got nothing to do with brainwashing or anything. But I never had that habit, I don't know why, but it never helped me, in fact it only distracted me more. But I found walking in circles while reciting anything -not just the quran- helped me memorize faster. So this habit is only about memorizing, it has nothing to do with Islam particularly.
