  • I Love You Philip Morris will not be released in the US
     OP - April 13, 2010, 12:33 AM

This just makes me angry. Why are people in such an advanced supposedly-tolerant country still so prejudiced against gay people? it really is baffling to me.

    http://uk.movies.yahoo.com/blog/article/15352/why-doesnt-hollywood-love-phillip-morris.html

    Quote
Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor's gay comedy 'I Love You Phillip Morris' has been delayed indefinitely in the US.

The offbeat film, which has already been released in the UK to generally positive reviews, was supposed to be released on 26 March in the US, but was put back until 30 April.

However, a spokesperson for the movie has told The LA Times that the film has been delayed once again and there is no release date scheduled for the time being.

Based on real life events chronicled in the book 'I Love You Phillip Morris: A True Story of Life, Love, and Prison Breaks,' Jim Carrey plays a con artist who falls in love with his titular cell mate (McGregor).

Carrey, who has been praised for his performance, recently revealed that he was bracing himself for controversy over the film.

He said, "I don't really care about the reaction, if there's a negative reaction. I care about doing a story about amazing, fascinating people. It's a true story about love, and someone's relentlessness to find it and keep it."
There has not been an official reason given for the postponement of the film, and while it may not be Carrey’s most mainstream film, it’s still something of a shock to see a movie with two big leads struggling to find a release date.

    So, why the delay?

The subject matter has been mooted as a potential problem. While films like 'Brokeback Mountain' and 'Milk' turned into Oscar-winning triumphs, they were packaged as serious dramas. But this is a quirky, surreal film, starring a lead actor normally seen in family comedies.

The other aspect concerns the worrying state of independent movies. 'I Love You Phillip Morris' struggled to find a buyer at the Sundance festival in 2009, until Consolidated Pictures Group eventually picked it up. However, marketing and releasing the film could be a costly venture without the backing of a major studio.

I also read this article in LA Times.

However, the article you cited is more recent so I guess it is getting released after all.

Still, the fact that all major studios are afraid to back such a great film with big starts tells us a lot.

If it was about 2 chicks, it wouldn't have any problems..Wink

But seriously, I wouldn't read too much into it, it is not as if the government is blocking movies about gay people, and hollywood is not a place big on homophobia (my cable service has gay channels).
Its just a business, and if a movie about gay jesus making love to luke (I actually saw this film, lolz) will make money, they'll market it.

Not to be cynical, but they'll do the 'release is being blocked' thing often to drum up attention with controversy, which I find annoying because I think it does more harm than good. Then they act like they won something, by releasing a movie nobody was stopping from being released...distracts the real struggle for gay rights.

superstructure is faith and the dome is a vain hope. Superstition

Meh, jut as I ignored Milk and Brokeback Mountain, so I shall ignore this parade of pandering. I've got better things to watch than that sort of crap.

Milk and Brokeback mountain are both really good movies tbt.

Besides, it was time for a true gay comedy to hit the cinemas  dance

@Homer, I'm not talking about gay rights or legislation, I'm talking about social acceptance. There is a difference.
I saw this movie at a cinema in a small northern English town. I had to catch the 10 pm showing cuz all the earlier ones were fully-booked. And even at 10 the theater was packed and we all laughed our asses off. It's a great movie, it really is. I wrote about it in the movie thread.

I'm not saying Hollywood is homophobic, I'm saying they are afraid people are not gonna see it because it's against "family values". So yes you're right, it is business. All the major studios are afraid to back it because it might gross the expected profits. But the reason is not it's a bad movie but because it is a movie with two male gay lovers.
