  • White hand
     OP - April 20, 2010, 12:41 PM

A few times in the Quran it talks about one of the "scary miracles" that Allah gave Moses as being him taking out his hand and it was white.

Is there something revealing in the Arabic wording (such as "glowing light a source of light") or was it just literally white?  Does anyone know the origin of this "white hand miracle"?

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

You always ask interesting questions!  Afro

Yes I always thought this was a weird "Miracle" for Moses to impress Pharaoh and his court with.

I mean making your hand white? WTF?

Anyway - yes it just says "He took his hand out and Lo! it was white for everyone to see!" (7:108)

    وَنَزَعَ يَدَهُ فَإِذَا هِيَ بَيْضَاءُ لِلنَّاظِرِينَ

I did a quick search and found this from the Bible:

    King James Bible
And the LORD said furthermore unto him, Put now thine hand into thy bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow.

    King James Bible
And he said, Put thine hand into thy bosom again. And he put his hand into his bosom again; and plucked it out of his bosom, and, behold, it was turned again as his other flesh.

    Well, you know, magic tricks.

have some white powder in your pocket, tell the bad king you gonna show him a sign of god, put your hand into the pocket and pull it out, completly white! Uuuuhhhh.

But it escapes me how this should be scary. Maybe it has something to do with dead bodys that turn pale after a while.

Ive got a keen eye for such bogus tricks.  He probably just sat on it for a while, stopped the blood supply, until it went white.  Moses was no Paul Daniels.

    Qur'an:

    وَاضْمُمْ يَدَكَ إِلَى جَنَاحِكَ تَخْرُجْ بَيْضَاءَ مِنْ غَيْرِ سُوءٍ

"And put your hand within thine armpit, it will come forth white without hurt"  (20:22)

    Bible:
"Put now your hand into your bosom. And he put his hand into his bosom: and when he took it out, behold, his hand was leprous as snow." (Exodus 4:6)

I was going to come here to post that Hassan.  In the bible "white" refers to leprosy

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Are you fucking kidding me? He just stopped the blood supply from his hand for a few moments? AND THE PHARAOH BOUGHT IT?!

Jesus christ, stupid to a new level.

That's assuming all that shit actually happened.  Roll Eyes

Well the possibility is that Muhammad heard or read the text and only picked up on the white part of the speech/text and copied it down, forgetting the leprous part of the biblical text.  So from viewpoint of it actually happened then Muhammad could have got it wrong.  That is of course as DigDeep pointed out if it actually happened.

( I thought a lot of academics agreed that there wasn't any conclusive evidence that a person named Moses existed.  )

Excellent, well found!  So the "miracle" was that his hand had leprosy and then it didn't, the old "now you see it, now you don't" but Muhammad thought the miracle was whiteness and not leprosy.

Every time he did the trick he had to pull his hand out from under his coat, I just thought "Cheating bastard, he's just squeezing the blood out under his arm pit".

Do the Tafseers say anything interesting about this? If they don't mention the leprosy it might be interesting to see what bullshit they make up Smiley

well this "white" thing is used in Quran in different verses for different reasons dear TheRationalizer., SOme times you can take that as "Parable"

For e.g. you tell a Lie, and some one asks you about it,  and your face becomes "white" .. Which is same for e.g in this verse; I use only Shakir's translation
    Quote
003.107: And as to those whose faces turn white, they shall be in Allah's mercy; in it they shall-abide.

Any way here are the verses that deals with that "white" thing in Quran..
    Quote
: 037.046:White, delicious to those who drink.

035.027: Do you not see that Allah sends down water from the cloud, then We bring forth therewith fruits of various colors; and in the mountains are streaks, white and red, of various hues and (others) intensely black?

035.013: He causes the night to enter in upon the day, and He causes the day to enter in upon the night, and He has made subservient (to you) the sun and the moon; each one follows its course to an appointed time; this is Allah, your Lord, His is the kingdom; and those whom you call upon besides Him do not control a straw.

028.032: Enter your hand into the opening of your bosom,  it will come forth white without evil, and draw your hand to yourself to ward off fear: so these two shall be two arguments from your Lord to Firon and his chiefs, surely they are a transgressing people.

027.012: And enter your hand into the opening of your bosom, it shall come forth white without evil; among nine signs to Firon and his people, surely they are a transgressing people.

026.033: And he drew forth his hand, and lo! it appeared white to the onlookers.

020.022: And press your hand to your side, it shall come out white without evil: another sign:

012.084: And he turned away from them, and said: O my sorrow for Yusuf! and his eyes became white on account of the grief, and he was a repressor (of grief).

007.108: And he drew forth his hand, and lo! it was white to the beholders.

003.107: And as to those whose faces turn white, they shall be in Allah's mercy; in it they shall-abide.

003.106: On the day when (some) faces shall turn white and (some) faces shall turn black; then as to those whose faces turn black: Did you disbelieve after your believing? Taste therefore the chastisement because you disbelieved.

002.187: It is made lawful to you to go into your wives on the night of the fast; they are an apparel for you and you are an apparel for them; Allah knew that you acted unfaithfully to yourselves, so He has turned to you (mercifully) and removed from you (this burden); so now be in contact with them and seek what Allah has ordained for you, and eat and drink until the whiteness of the day becomes distinct from the blackness of the night at dawn, then complete the fast till night, and have not contact with them while you keep to the mosques; these are the limits of Allah, so do not go near them. Thus does Allah make clear His communications for men that they may guard (against evil).

well those are the verses that contain the "white".. As you can see one has to make out the meaning of the word and the statement with reference to the story that is coupled to verse and that is the reason Quran itself can not stand but some one has to write Tafsir to explain it.. look at the repetition in the underlined verses

People often use the "parable" argument, but what does it mean if it is a parable? A parable isn't any old shit that doesn't make any sense, a parable is an alternative way of explaining something to make it EASIER to understand.  If it makes no fucking sense then it is not a parable! Smiley

And on the subject of parables, the quality of parables definitely dropped from Jesus to Muhammad.  Muhammad says that Jesus was not God, but that just goes to show that a human is better at parables than God himself.

well., it means such books/words are NOT words of Allah/God but they are just stories and stories and stories told by people..
