  • Richard Dawkins and Militant Atheism
     OP - March 10, 2011, 03:24 PM

Was talking to somebody today in the University chaplaincy and they said that he had said this term and wanted there to be no such thing as RE in schools and no provisions made for religious practice in the public sphere, i.e in businesses and universities even going as far as saying that there should be no houses of worship. Was wondering whether he has made any of these statements or mentioned the term Militant atheism in any of his speeches or papers.

    Thank you

On the contrary, Dawkins repeatedly says that schools should teach comparative religion in schools.

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

Thats what I thought to and did say it, was just wondering whether it was some kind of religious bollocks session.

Yes he has, I think I read some of these comments in the God Delusion, Dawkins is completely right though. I think we need to teach the "faith-heads" a lesson.

By the way, all of the other things I am quite sure Dawkins has said, i.e. that there should not be any public funding for such projects.

Edit, yeah he has talked about militant atheism, not too sure about RE, can't imagine Dawkins saying that about RE, since Dawkins is about learning for yourself. I think he might have objected to the way RE is taught, as opposed to teaching RE.

To my knowledge I am 100 sure Dawkins has argued for the abstinence of faith education schools. I saw this in a recent documentary he made, something faith schools menace.

So that the religious institutions and provisions should not be paid for my the state not that they should be outlawed?

Yes.  In his documentary the premise was that British tax payer dollars should not go to faith based schools, not that they should be outlawed.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Yes, what you said above. And that faith schools should not only teach about one faith but all faiths.  Faith schools are exempt from ofcoms examinations or someshit, so they teach kids alot of bullshit.

Sounds reasonable to me, it was religious bullshitting then.

You make it sound like it was unexpected.

The bullshitting? It wasnt unexpected I was just making sure of my position and I said to the woman that I want to make sure by myself I am withholding judgement, tbh I was thinking Dawkin's is much more reasonable than that and I am now right. Thanks for the info.

It creates problem as well for individual families of different faiths who live in an enclave of another faith.  They have to travel extra distances to either go to a non religious school or a school of their faith if they chose.  The bullshit taught is a hindrance too.  Why should someone give money to the state who then officially funds people who then teach their student that that someone is going to hell, that donkeys can fly, that prayer can heal, and if someone doesn't take Jesus in their heart they will burn etc.  That isn't to say they should be outlawed but that they shouldn't receive state sanction and tax payer dollars these things that should be taught at home.
