  • Are women the true gems of Islam?
     OP - February 07, 2012, 04:18 AM

Since Islam allows the males to essentially get away with a lot of things, the women seem to have been very conservative to keeping a very positive reflection of Islam in the face of criticism, whereas males are most likely to lash out. I'm putting this out there since many female Muslims I've met are very sweet and caring.  Not only that but since Muslim women have to put up with a lot of bullshit they are very thick-skinned in the face of adversity, whereas the males seem to be pampered with the notion that they own and control everything so things they want come easier?. Even through devotion most Muslim women follow the teachings all the way since the moment they deviate they are forever damned. While the men can get away with sleeping around, maybe trying alcohol, doing other illicit activities, but at the end of the day a few prayers of forgiveness and everything is forgotten. What's your opinion on this?

It's called sexism, it's been around since time immemorial around the world. I don't think Islam is to be blamed - after all both sexes will supposedly be punished equally for these 'crimes'.  Woman are seen . in the vast majority of Muslim countries, as inferior and vulnerable entities that need to keep their 'purity' in order for them to be marriage material. While for men, they merely need to have the wherewithal to pay for the dowry.   Ironically - as they criticise the evil Westerners for skimpy clothing -  they are also objectify them by making them an extension of their so called honour, which has no basis in Islam as everyone is responsible for his/her deeds.

I tend to find that Muslim women are also key players in supporting the disgusting aspects of Islam. You find mothers rallying and supporting their sons in their suicide missions. Women who reinforce gender stereotypes and shun any woman who deviate.  So yeah they put up with a lot of shit but then they turn around and dole out the same shit to other women.

But this is not restricted to Islam of course. In any sexist society, there will always be women who truly believe and support the structure.

        To triumph over the tempest
And to contend with unpredictable gales.

I will never again fear ghost or ghoul
For I am empowered with a zeal to explore the unfathomed.

        I press forward
With the fresh power of tenacity and determination.
I will not fear those gory thorns.
I will not shrink from the battle
Though teeming with phobia and death
So long as this battle will restore me to life.
        These are my oars.

I begin to row in the midst of the sea
        And to find my direction.
        There beyond the unfathomable depths
The inner voice is calling to me:
        "Why be afraid?
You have a compass in your confidence and faith."

Considering that gems have no voice of their own, are not free to go where they want, are locked away so only their owners can drool over them, I don't know, what do you think?
