  • Economics!
     OP - March 16, 2012, 09:20 AM

Okay, first of all, I have to say that I don't think I understand economics. We do take it at school, and I do get the highest grades, but I don't think I fully grasp it at a fundamental level. So I'm not going to give any opinions or comments, but I'm just going to put this here:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArfPytAoeZ0&feature=related

... and see what you guys have to say. Watch the whole thing. The first two videos are just introductory -- it gets interesting in the third video.

Our Econ teacher showed us this series at school. I'm left unconvinced, but I don't have enough knowledge to make a decision either way.

Could you formulate a question one paragraph long or shorter instead of suggesting we watch 3 videos on youtube and then let you know what we think? Sounds a bit un-specific and a bit time consuming for those of us who are done studying introduction to economics...

No, I can't. Basically the videos argue against the fractional banking reserve system, and the modern concepts of money and interest, and I don't trust myself to adequately summarize their points and argue their case myself. I can only promise that the videos are interesting and worth watching.

Yes, wouldn't life be much better if I had a bag of golden coins instead of paper money which only the evil government can draw print, what if all my savings one day will become as worthless as a mere bag filled with paper, which it really is? Maybe so harakaat. I don't know. One solution is not to have any extra money and the headache of how to preserve your riches is gone Smiley
Anyway, sorry, but I am not going to watch the videos, though I suspect I've watched something similar already.

I watched the first part, I am an Economist and I think that video is pretty flawed in some concepts, I would like to elaborate and lucubrate on the subject but it is such a broad topic that I don't know where to start from and I have a lot more important things to do.

There are some pretty good explanations here, I accidentally ran into this, I read the Chapter where it is talking about the Basics of Banking, it has some good explanation:

That's not at all what the videos talk about, but suit yourself.

I hate videos myself, anyway, and I would not have watched it if it wasn't shown to us at school, so I understand.

Money as debt 2 is much better...

Basically it shows that having an economic model based on infinite growth in a finite world (which is the paradigm the global economic system is built on) is impossible to sustain, and is destined to collapse.

    I agree.

Here's Michael Ruppert warning people in '06 about the meltdown of '08, he explains how the paradigm of infinite growth is fundamentally responsible...

    Welcome to Austrian economics

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Paul Gringon (who made money as debt) isn't an Austrian, but I know what you mean.
