Good its about time someone banned that idiot country

Assuming they allow Dalma Rushdi Malhas to participate. If not, I can quite easily see a ban.

As I've said numerous times they haven't been banned for decades. I don't see that changing any time soon. What if say they're deciding on whether to allow her to participate and then suddenly find themselves banned? Do you think we'll see Saudi women participating in any international sport event for yrs?

I don't think Pakistan, Afghanistan or UAE are restricting female athletes who would qualify or breaching the Olympic charter by other means.

I'm pretty sure UAE are fielding female swimmers.

I don't think women are allowed to participate in any professional sport in Afghanistan. In Pakistan its very few sports, usually the ones where they're 'fully covered'  Roll Eyes which is still against the charter because there's discrimination against women. No idea about the UAE, I doubt they're fielding female swimmers, can't find anything on google about it, a name might help.

Like Kenan said, it's nearly a century ago. Very different times and a very different committee with very different leanings. Irrespective of that, the 1936 Olympics were awarded to Germany years before Hitler's rise to power. You could argue that Germany should have forfeit their hosting privilege in light of it's condition in 1936, but that would only be a case for a German 'ban', not a case for allowing Saudi Arabia to participate. If you feel strongly that Germany breached the Olympic spirit, then apply that same reasoning consistently.

It was a stupid comparison of me to make.

Question: Do you think there should be clear rules and regulations for participation in major international sports events or not?

Yes and those rules and regulations must be followed consistently instead of having a sudden surprising moral wake up call about something thats been going on for decades and then pointing to a charter to justify it.

Tell that to Sadaf Rahimi, who will be boxing at London 2012

Interestingly enough, the IOC suspended Afghanistan from the games following the Taliban banning women from sports. So, the argument about a sudden moral awakening doesn't seem to be standing up to scrutiny. Not that it had much merit anyway. It seems quite confused. If you hold to the position that these rules are sound and should be observed, you should see it as good news that that they are being observed now. But, oddly, it's a point of contention for you.

Too fucking busy, and vice versa.

Can Afghan women participate in swimming the competitions? Kuwaiti women in gymnastics? I don't think so. So because this discrimination exists surely these countries should be banned too? And I'm still waiting for the names of those UAE swimmers. The Taliban's Islamic Emirate was banned because they didn't let women participated...they ruled for 6 yrs, how long has Saudi gone without letting women participate? Its inconsistency. And why hasn't Iran ever been banned? Women are allowed to participate but there are very harsh laws they have to comply with (link below) again its discrimination but no ban.

Its not the rules that I'm against. Its the inconsistency of applying those laws that is bs.

EDIT: Brunei and Qatar have never sent women to the Olympics either, the latter is sending them to the london games but I don't think Brunei is and there's no talk of banning them. Inconsistency  whistling2

London 2012 Olympics: Saudis allow women to compete
    By Frank Gardner
    BBC News

    ----------

Saudi Arabia is to allow its women athletes to compete in the Olympics for the first time.

A statement from the Saudi Embassy in London says the country's Olympic Committee will "oversee participation of women athletes who can qualify".

The decision will end recent speculation as to whether the entire Saudi team could have been disqualified on grounds of gender discrimination.

The public participation of women in sport is still fiercely opposed by many Saudi religious conservatives.

There is almost no public tradition of women participating in sport in the country.

Saudi officials say that with the Games now just a few weeks away, the only female competitor at Olympic standard is showjumper Dalma Rushdi Malhas.

But they added that there may be scope for others to compete and that if successful they would be dressed "to preserve their dignity".

In practice this is likely to mean modest, loose-fitting garments and "a sports hijab", a scarf covering the hair but not the face.

For the desert kingdom, the decision to allow women to compete in the Olympics is a huge step, overturning deep-rooted opposition from those opposed to any public role for women.

As recently as April, the indications were that Saudi Arabia's rulers would accede to the sensitivities of the religious conservatives and maintain the ban on allowing women to take part.

But for the past six weeks there have been intense, behind-the-scenes discussions led by King Abdullah, who has long been pushing for women to play a more active role in Saudi society.

    'Subtle reform'
In secret meetings in Jeddah, officials say a consensus was reached in mid-June between the king, the crown prince, the foreign minister, the leading religious cleric, the grand mufti and others, to overturn the ban.

An announcement was ready to be made but then had to be delayed as the country marked the sudden death of Crown Prince Nayef.

"It's very sensitive," a senior Saudi official told the BBC. "King Abdullah is trying to initiate reform in a subtle way, by finding the right balance between going too fast or too slow.

"For example, he allowed the participation of women in the Shura council [an advisory body] so the Olympic decision is part of an ongoing process, it's not isolated."

The official acknowledged that to refuse to let women take part would have looked bad on the international stage.

"Partly because of the mounting criticism we woke up and realised we had to deal with this. We believe Saudi society will accept this," the official said.

It is not the first time a Saudi monarch has backed a controversial reform against domestic opposition.

King Faisal, who introduced television in the 1960s and was eventually assassinated, insisted on introducing education for girls.

Today, Saudi women graduates outnumber their male counterparts.

The one female athlete who may be good enough to compete is a showjumper.

    How convenient.

The most modestly dressed of all sports. Headgear mandatory.

Ah I see. Still if they qualify for something like archery or the like I think the same "modest" dress code will still be in full force.

No way will you ever get a Saudi woman to qualify in swimming or sprinting, or a real athletics event. Shame, really.

They should be banned, it is just a gimmick, I think all Arabs countries who don't support equality for women should be banned. All the countries signatory to the Cairo Islamic human rights declaration should be banned, unless they adopt the human rights charter.
