  • Ibn Rawandi
     OP - June 29, 2012, 11:41 PM

This man is becoming one of my favourite philosophers

    Quote
God has bestowed upon human beings the gift of intellect, by which they can judge right and wrong. If what the prophets announce corresponds to what the intellect decrees, then prophets are superfluous. If it contradicts what the intellect decrees, then one should not listen to them

He has a point, if God has given us the gift of intellect then what is point of sending prophets to us so as to prevent the mankind from going astray. Huh?

    Quote
Ibn al-Rawandi also points out specific Muslim traditions, and tries to show that they are laughable. The tradition that the angels rallied round to help Muhammad is not logical, because it implies that the angels of Badr were weaklings, able to kill only seventy of the Prophet's enemies. And if the angels were willing to help Muhammad at Badr, where were they at Uhud, when their help was so badly needed?

Exactly, i guess maybe the Arab pagans were too strong for them that they cant help the muslims.

Replying to this so that I can read it later at home Smiley

Also, I disagree with his intellect thing (from the very brief snippet you posted). Intellects can go awry. I think the point is to use one's intellect to determine if something is indeed revelation or not, and then in other matters one has faith. Or one uses one's intellect to have greater understanding and appreciation of God's laws, and then goes on from there.

Are you reading his book currently BTW?

So do you think mankind need prophets sent to them with their revelations to tell them what is right and wrong without relying on their intellect which was given to them by God in the first place?

Not really, i just stumbled upon it while i was doing some personal readings Tongue
