It does not sound like something Muhammad would have said. It is certainly not in the style of the hadiths you see in Sunni collections like Bukhari.
I just searched the words "Acquire knowledge" on Sunnah.com and nothing like that comes up. Though the term "Acquire knowledge" does appear a lot, it is mainly in conjunction with reading the Quran and to warn that those that seek knowledge for worldly gain instead of to know God will be in the hellfire.
http://sunnah.com/search/-dq-Acquire-knowledge-dq-This is quite an interesting one:
"I heard the Messenger of Allah say: 'Do not acquire knowledge in order to show off before the scholars, or to argue with the foolish, or to attract people's attention, for whoever does that will be in Hell.'" (Da'if)
http://sunnah.com/urn/1252580Is this an attack on the academy?
And this one:
"The Messenger of Allah() said, "He who does not acquire knowledge with the sole intention of seeking the Pleasure of Allah but for worldly gain, will not smell the fragrance of Jannah on the Day of Resurrection."
http://sunnah.com/riyadussaliheen/13/16Is this one an attack on pursuing research and technology? I guess it depends on whether you interpret "worldly gain" to mean personal gain or gain for humans in general.
