  • Atheism barely defines me
     OP - March 01, 2013, 02:25 PM

    A good piece about atheism, identity, and a life without gods.

    So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    That's a good post.

    Atheism is nothing more than a statement of rejection, that something is not true. So, we could have (or do have) people who are sadists and Atheists, or humanists and Atheists. This is possible, because Atheism doesn't say anything about ones own ideas about politics, morality, philosophy etc.

    Believe those who are seeking the truth. Doubt those who find it.

    I remember someone saying once that being an atheist was actually half way to being a muslim cuz at least they have the first part of the kalimah down pat "La Illaha- ________"

    thought that was clever.

    I guess it goes both ways though. Muslims are almost there too. Just drop the "illa-lah" part (oh, well, and all of the hatred, bigotry, misogyny, homophobia, anti-Semitism, and conspiracy theories) and Muslims are pretty much atheists.  They can use the same logic the use to disprove other gods to disprove Allah. He neither helps nor harms and he can not aid himself so he relies on humans to do his killing for him.

    "athiest" is a asinine stupid label

    If I was to make a list of all the things i don't follow or think are true and gives myself a label/noun for it, that list would go into the thousands.....

    @happymurtad

    the first thing you gotta do to become a muslim even before you get on to allah or mohammed is make a testimonial pledge of poly-atheism. You have to be certain that 99.99% of claimed deities don't exist. The biggest sin in islam and only unforgivable one isn't raping 1000 women of killing 1000 babies, it's to not be a polyathiest and think that of the other thousands of deities exists.

    As of yet no muslim has attempted to refute this challenge of mine to disprove the existence of even one deity besides allah. That's the first thing that is required to become muslim and no muslim can even do that !

    From that blog

    “I don’t mind these atheists, but these militant ones who don’t believe in any god at all seem to be going a bit far”

    When you are a Bear of Very Little Brain, and you Think of Things, you find sometimes that a Thing which seemed very Thingish inside you is quite different when it gets out into the open and has other people looking at it.

    Right except you don't live in a world where the existence of all the other things you don't believe in or follow is constantly emphasised and used to identify you. No one considers the existence of unicorns (except Aurora  Tongue) or the flying spaghetti monster essential to their life. If most of the world's human population did not subscribe to a religion or some form of deity then we wouldn't need to use the word atheist to distinguish ourselves from that crowd when questioned about our religious orientation.

    Does the shahada in Arabic literally mean that you have to testify to the fact that there is no god but Allah and Mohammed is his messenger? I was always taught that it was merely a statement of faith. If so that's problematic for muslims...
