Listen, if you do not write a book in the near future I will swim down through these Great Lakes myself and smack you clear upside the head.

    That was a compliment.

Islam really is such a disappointment. How cool would it have been to have the real truth from the real creator of the universe to bring about real good. I feel duped and gullible as I read over that khutbah again.

I had a hard time with this when I first heard this was in Islam. You know what is funny Hell is a Christian idea and I think Mo stole it from them. As he was unknowing as no where in the Torah is hell ever talked about.

On the day of judgement there will be 73 different muslim sects, and only one of them will go to heaven.

Yep. I've heard this many times too.

Does anyone have the hadiths citations that say this?

"Blessed are they who can laugh at themselves, for they shall never cease to be amused."

It's a pretty well known hadith in Bukhari. A google search would probably find it.

So far Islam only has four sects of you include ahmadis. Islam is going to die out before it reaches 10 sects let alone 73.

Second of all when the hadith says "sects" does it mean only primary sects such as sunni, or shia etc or does the 73 also include subsects like for example Jafri is a subsect of shi'ism.

In my opinion a life without curiosity is not a life worth living

Just googled it - seems it's a mish mash of Abu Dawud hadiths and other clerical writings that claim this. Don't see a Bukhari reference yet... Trying to find the exact source(s) still....

Muslim, sorry: ((My ummah will be dividedinto seventy three sects. All of them will be in the Fire except one?)), [Saheeh Muslim, no.976]

I was pretty sure a similar reference was in Bukhari as well but I can't find out right now.

Couldn't find it in Bukhari, but it's mentioned in all 4 Sunan collections.

Abu Dawud Book 35 Hadith Number 4579, Tirmidhi Book 43 Hadith Number 2649, Ibn Majah Book 36 Hadith Number 3991:
    Quote
Narated By Abu Hurairah : The Prophet said: "The Jews were split up into seventy one or seventy two sects; and the Christians were split up into seventy one or seventy two sects; and my community will be split up into seventy three sects."

Tirmidhi Book 43, Hadith Number 2650:
    Quote
Abdullah ibn Amr reported that Allah’s Messeenger said, “There will befall my Ummah exactly (all those) evils which befell the people of Isra'il, so much so that if there was one amongst them who openly committed fornication with his mother there will be among my Ummah one who will do that, and if the people of Isra'il were fragmented into seventy-two sects my Ummah will be fragmented into seventy-three sects. All of them will be in Hell Fire except one sect." They (the Companions) said: "Allah's Messenger, which is that?" Whereupon he said: "It is one to which I and my companions belong.”

Ibn Majah Book 36, Hadith Number 3992:
    Quote
Auf ibn Malik reported that Allah’s Messenger said, "The Jews were divided into seventy one parts but only one part will be in the Paradise and seventy parts will be in the Fire; the Christians were divided into seventy two parts (out of which) seventy one parts will enter the Fire and only one part will be admitted in the Heaven. By Him in whose Hand Muhammad's life lies, my Ummah will certainly be divided into seventy three sections. Only one section will be admitted in the Heaven and seventy two sections will be in the Fire." He was asked, "Allah's Messenger, whom of them are (in the Heaven)?" He said, "Al-Jama'a."

Muslim pages (and I agree with them) count sub sects as sects, since a sect is an off shoot of an original form anyway, therefore it is a much larger list.

    http://www.real-islam.org/73_8.htm

Also, even though that list says 71, one thing to consider is any proof that the list goes beyond 73 already (which I have read but the link no longer exists) would be something Muslims would not really want out there, and would simply refuse to count certain sects as sects.  Because going over, means it's wrong.

Inhale the good shit, exhale the bullshit.

For some reason the notion of hell and heaven never really made an impact on my life even when I did have faith. Although the guilt that followed because I indulged in all things haram were an important factor in shaping my life. I must say I was petrified by the grilling session after death by those grave angels. I wonder if some day Koran would be a bestselling graphic novel, it certainly would make Edgar  Poe blush.   I bet that lunatic Muhammad could have cooked up some more graphic novels of epic propotions if given a chance. Apologies for sidetracking off the main topic.
