A fresh analysis of the 2011 census has shown that Christian faith in the UK is declining rapidly amongst the British-born population, whilst belief in Islam has dramatically increased.

A report published by the Office for National Statistics revealed that the percentage of people following a Christian faith dropped from 71.7 per cent in 2001 to 59.3 per cent in 2011. More than one in 10 under 25s in the UK now describe themselves as Muslim.

Figures for Christianity were boosted however by the 1.2 million foreign-born Christians residing in the UK, such as Polish Catholics and evangelicals from countries such as Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the percentage of the people who have no religion rose from 14.8 per cent to a quarter of the population.

This fluctuation is being attributed to both ageing Christians, a quarter of which are aged 65 and above and younger Muslims, half of which are under 25. Rising levels of immigration across England and Wales over the last decade are also believed to have contributed, with the 2011 census showing 600,000 more foreign-born followers of an Islamic faith.

Christianity is still the most prevalent faith in England and Wales and has 33.2 million followers, but such a rapid decline could suggest that it may lose its place as the most popular religion amongst Britons within the decade.

What does "followers" mean?
I have met thousands of people in England. Not one of them was someone i would say is a "follower"
How many people here know of people who actually practice Christianity?

I should have named the topic better

I wasn't happy, though not surprised, to read that a larger portion of the UK is now Muslim. A few positives though:
- irreligion is on the rise
- the census is often filled in by family-heads. Muslim parents are likely to list all of their children as being Muslim. In practice, there are many secret kaffir on that list. Plus there are others out there that are yet too yoong to smell the bullshit. But hopefully, an ever larger number will.

If atheism and Islam continue to rise, we're likely to get to a situation where Islam, Christianity and Atheism will be divided into equal numbers soon. Is that worrying?

You're right. There's likely to be a large number of 'passive' Christians on that list.

It is the same for Muslims. The Friday prayers at the mosques are just social gatherings.

Question: Why do people say they are Christian or Muslim when they are neither?
Answer: When it is judged that a certain answer will bring more acceptance or a feel good factor.

What time did you get up this morning?
If the real answer is 2 pm, it would be seen as lazy, so I will say 7 am.

Jim: in my experience, face-value Christians tend to pay minimal lip-service to their religion for the rest of their lives. It's almost like they can't be bothered to think too deeply about their beliefs, but would like to be considered for heaven, if it does exist. Whereas the equivalent in Muslims, seem to be lying dormant; often springing into action when the time or circumstances are right.

Hmm that is a good news from OP.. I think British Monarch should adopt Caliphate system of governance and whole nation should change its religion if possible queens name should be changed from Elizabeth I to some queen Lathifa....
