The Thomson Telephone Directory is truly an amazing book. If there is one investment I have made that I will never regret in my life, it is the time I invested in understanding the Thomson Telephone Directory. The thing about the Thomson Telephone Directory is that it speaks to me like no other book I've read. Such is the magnificence of the book that there is never a hollow reading session; each time I walk away with some truly amazing insights I overlooked before along with some indespensible contacts in case the washing meachine breaks down again or the toilet fails to flush.
What makes this possible is that there are, at least in my opinion, infinite layers to the Thomson Telephone Directory. The more time you spend with it, the more it seems to give back to you. And so, as I went deeper into the Thomson Telephone Directory, I was just mesmerized by its structure, cohesiveness, and the metaphors it employs that reflect my being so precisely. The book seems to be meticulously organised in such a way that you are able to conveniently peruse through a whole plethora of reflexologists, kebab houses and children's entertainers simply by searching for your particulr topic in alphabetical order. Miraculous. I know of no other book, either past or present, in the world that is able to accomplish such a feat.
What's heartbreaking for me, though, is how people have abandoned the Thomson Telephone Directory, turning it into an object of service. You don't pay reverence to the Thomson Telephone Directory by kissing it and keeping it on the top shelf, covering it with the best of coverings. No. Neither do you simply use the book to search for an address or telephone number. This miraculous book - without repetition or contradiction - a sign of divinity, something which I would have doubted in my formative years, is our link to one another, yet the majority of people view the Thomson Telephone Directory as a useful instrument only in times of emergencies.
Would you not call such a relationship hypocritical and selfish? Indeed, you would. But that's what our relationship with the Thomson Telephone Directory is: one of hypocrisy and selfishness. It is used as a tool to gain instant access to information, and comes out of its fancy covering only at "blessed" times such as when there's a funny smell coming from the basement or when you are in need of colonic irrigation.
The Thomson Telephone Directory is a book that is read widely, a book that is- at times- interpreted wildly, and ultimately a book that is understood hardly.
Sometimes, on a quiet night, I can almost hear the Thomson Telephone Directory weeping.
