  • Ex-twelver shia in UK
     OP - February 26, 2016, 10:20 AM

    Hi all.

I just thought I would introduce myself to the forum.
I am an extwelver as the username suggests!
I come from a religious background in which I attended religious seminaries all my life and became versed in the Islamic (shia) faith very well. I was a firm believer but have also always been a critical thinker.

I would constantly battle to reconcile tenets of the faith with my own personal morality. As I have embarked upon a PhD in Philosophy it has really forced me to address the difficult questions. Especially regarding sexism, slavery, et al.

Eventually I could no longer engage in Orwellian double think and had to break away formally.

I guess I'm currently searching for fellow ex-muslims to establish new networks of trust and friendship.

    Thank you all,

    Extwelver

    Welcome Extwelver.   Smiley

Interesting, I don't think we've ever had an ex twelver on here before.

    Thanks for the welcome.

It's not surprising because Twelver Shiism is just as much a political identity as it is religious.

Shias face Islamophobia from wider public and Shiaphobia from many Sunnis. This double oppression in conjunction with the whole theological Shia trope of being an oppressed group until the day of judgment enables many Shias to have a narrative that they can cling onto.

Yes we have. They're just the regular Shi'a ie those in Iraq & Iran and some parts of the Asian sub-continent. IraqiAtheist was one, Al-Razi was another - also the mod who used the nickname Irene (Or something like that) was another - there have been lots tbh

I didn't know that.  I knew all those posters were ex-Shia but I thought Twelvers were something different.  Well, you live and learn.   parrot
