  • A discussion with my mother and my aunt
     OP - April 03, 2009, 10:00 AM

    Hey folks,

I just had a debate about the nature of Islam and the contradictions in the Quran with my mother and my aunt. I tried to be moderate and reasonable, and I got some excellent results!

I started with the Quranic verses that females are inferior to males, and that husbands are allowed to beat their wives. Once they accepted the verses, their opposition was poor. My aunt admitted that she had questioned Islam before, she is very secular at any rate. She is now reading the Quran with a critical eye. My mother admitted that the Quran had been altered by males who wanted to enslave women. I allowed them to express their opinions and I was very respectful. I made some radical remarks, I said that Islam is devoid of meaning and would eventually die, they had nothing do say against it.

Afro Zaephon, at least you got your aunt to read the Quran with a critical eye.

My grandpa keeps saying that the Quran was wrongly interpreted, hijacked by men etc while my Uncle & cousin actually believe that stuff about women's inferiority & the need for women to wear hijab!  finmad

Well if the Quran has been altered how do they know which bits were altered? You could just as well argue that the nice bits are the alterations.

Nope, we had no further discussions. I think discussing with them is rather futile. My mother's true religion is Turkish nationalism, and my aunt is one of the most wishy-washy individuals on the planet.

I remember her saying a week ago that "Muslims are the most fanatical, backward people" and then a few days ago she plainly claimed that "everybody must be a Muslim." Talk about self-contradiction.

Rofl. Well at least you did get them thinking a bit, which shouldn't do them any harm.
