  • Break the chains of repression in Azerbaijan
     OP - May 08, 2009, 05:11 PM

Email from Amnesty that I would like to share:

    Dear Hassan,

Last Sunday, 3 May, was World Press Freedom Day.

But on that day, four Azerbaijani journalists continued to serve prison sentences, as a fifth stood trial.

In April we wrote to you about outspoken journalist and prisoner of conscience, Eynulla Fatullayev, currently serving an eight and a half year sentence. We believe Eynulla was imprisoned on trumped up charges to silence his reporting, which was critical of the Azerbaijani government. He suffered years of harassment before he was imprisoned - including being beaten in the street.

Unfortunately, Eynulla's is not an isolated case. Journalists in Azerbaijan, and elsewhere around the world, can face harassment, imprisonment and even death, just for doing their jobs.

Amnesty continues to lobby the Azerbaijani authorities to free Eynulla and others like him.
