  • Senegal Mufti's wife Distributes Condoms
     OP - May 12, 2009, 03:59 PM

Practically everyone out here must have realised that I'm not particularly fond of Islam but in the week I spent in Senegal, where my dad is posted, I saw something I really liked.

Actually, I've posted a lot about Senegal because my parents & sister live there, my father's a diplomat.

I saw a Muslim preacher's wife distributing free condoms to prostitutes & any "young men & women having unprotected sex."

This preacher lives near the Embassy, & I saw a large group of women coming to her house. Our gardener(a woman) told us that this preacher's wife distributes condoms to sex workers primarily, but anyone else who wants them as well. Prostitution is legal in Senegal btw.

Gardener disapproved of sex workers being legal, & was worried about her sons, but she said it was good that they use condoms at least.

I remember Hesperado saying that Senegalese AIDS statistics are false, & he's right about Senegal being pretty homophobic, but this incident makes me think statistics might be correct .

Anyway, this preacher's wife, & the Senegalese attitude of widespread condoms seems good.  Afro

I made friends with some girls there-two sisters one is 14, a few months younger to me, the other is 19. The older one has had sex with her boyfriend. Their mother told them to "mix" with me to "make good" their English.

Older one's told her parents about her boyfriend, but not the bit about sex, but she had protected sex, she told me. She says that she knows all about protection, & further everyone knows about protection.

These are upper middle class girls, but their attitudes could provide a mirror to Senegalese attitudes.

Senegal, including its Muslim religious leaders, aren't dogmatically against condoms. There's no such teaching. Senegal has the lowest AIDS rate in Sub Saharan Africa at .8%, it also doesn't have stonings, honor killings, & the death penalty.

This might not last, Senegal also has a Catholic population, from what I read in the newspapers there, Christians are more worried about inter faith marriages than Muslims( Muslim women also marry Christian men in equal numbers) as they can assimilate & disappear, & the two faiths do compete.

Most HIV prevelence figures in Africa are not very accurate.

Some countries's health departments inflate them so as to attract more aid, while others post lowered rates as an issue of national pride. Public health workers in the region generally believe the latter to be the case with Senegal.

Anyway, I agree, Senegal is a really nice country, and a fair bit more progressive than many of it's neighbours. When I used to work in Guinea-Bissau, it was always a matter of excitement to travel over to Ziguinchor for the weekend.

You can get free condoms in Pakistan too, in fact even in rural villages, some female village elders will hand them out.

I have seen condoms and lectures about STD being given to both genders in Somalia and Somaliland. Both countries very religious. I'm glad to see religion didn't overrule common sense  Afro

Muslims are not really opposed to condoms like the Catholics are.

I know. Catholics are just weird tho.
In Africa where Muslims dominate AIDs are not as high as areas dominated by Catholics/Christians
