I know many of you here have read books concerning women and Islam but I would like to recommend one that you should buy which is Women an Gender in Islam: Historical Roots of a Modern Debate by Leila Ahmed. Basically it is the book I used to argue in my R.S. coursework that Islam is not sexist or bigoted towards women but whatever your preconceived ideas or feelings are towards this topic, I advise to take a look because it is a book worth reading and is not filled with bias.

"The ideal tyranny is that which is ignorantly self-administered by its victims. The most perfect slaves are, therefore, those which blissfully and unawaredly enslave themselves."

Does the book argue for Islam against the backdrop of other religions or against the backdrop of Secular Humanism?

Well the book is more about confronting the orthodox androcetric political version of Islam and how Islam went from emphasizing the ethical and spiritual message regarding women. It does not talk against any particular backdrop in fact it says the real relevant matter is not how we nowadays view the moral practices of those before us but more about the ethical and spiritual message Islam came to bring about such as that God will reward every male and female servant that does good - I'm not sure about the exact verse but its somewhre in the QUr'an. However Omar I do highly recommend you read it. It does talk a lot about all the issues regarding women and Islam that you find important
