    This thread is good and has great potential.

    Ritual cleansing is a very distinct semitic pagan and later zoroastrian practice. The concept is to be not just 'physically' clean but also spiritually clean. Water was always considered something holy in the near eastern native religions and the washing yourself in a ritualistic manner was considered a way of warding off and "cleaning" yourself of demons and bad spirits.

    Muhammad also adopted a few custome from Jahiliya culture i.e. women having inheritance rights and divorce but he reduced them to create a more patrilineal society or as one would say today probably more along the lines of patriarchal.
