Tennessee  Lt. Governor  Says Islam May Be a ‘Cult’

    http://thelede.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/07/27/tennessee-official-says-islam-may-be-a-cult/

    Quote
Tennessee’s lieutenant governor, Ron Ramsey, has been asked to explain recent comments captured on video in which he suggested that Muslim Americans might not have a constitutionally protected right to worship in the United States.

Mr. Ramsey, who hopes to win the Republican nomination for governor in a primary next month with support from Tea Party activists, was asked by a constituent this month to explain his position on the “threat that’s invading our country from the Muslims.” As Jeff Woods of The Nashville Scene reported, a tape of the exchange posted online shows the lieutenant governor responding, “I’m all about freedom of religion,” before casting doubt on Islam’s credentials as a religion by saying:

You could even argue whether being a Muslim is actually a religion or is it a nationality, way of life or cult, whatever you want to call it.

Do not let silence become your legacy.. Question everything
I renounced my faith to become a kafir,
the beloved betrayed me and turned in to  a Muslim

It would have been convincing if he himself wasn't part of a cult.

    +1

Christianity could be called a cult too.

The difference between a cult and a religion? The number of followers ( I know, it is not technically true)

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

No, it is technically true. Well, it is if you include the age of the cult/religion too. I've heard so-called "experts" try to define cults by certain criteria that separate them from bonafide religions, apart from number of followers and age, but I don't fuckin buy it for a minute-- it's all backwards, cults were called cults before such "diagnostic criteria" existed-- the criteria were created to defend the arbitrary labeling of some religions as cults.

    fuck you

lol in spanish the word for sect and/or religion is culto.  I was asking everyone, why is everyone in a cult around here?

I use the word cult sometimes to describe the isolationist, puritanical, exclusivist lifestyle that many veil-wearing Muslim women in the West follow.  It's all about the connotations and trying to express your thoughts most accurately.  Smiley

The old joke about that is that the difference is the amount of real estate they own.

To be honest, you can make a case for every 'established' religion to have cult like features.

Oh yeah yeezeevee, I agree that some religions are more cult like than others. For example, Islam's injunction that to leave it is a sin punishable by death, is particularly cultish.
