Is the Malaysian government trying to get people to apostate/apostasise/whatever the damn word is?  Its like muslims are second class citizens in that country.

They definitely shouldn't be going.  Fergie's outfits are wayyy haram.  dance Can we expect a wave of apostasy in the lead up to the gig?

I wonder if this will cause any Malays to apostacize.  If they see that it's the non-Muslims who can go out & have fun, drink and watch the Black Eyed Peas in concert then it might make them reconsider their faith although as far as I can tell, it's hard to apostacize in Malaysia.  Case in point:

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but need to vent. It's impossible and illegal to openly apostacise for Muslims in Malaysia. But there are a lot of liberal Muslims here, and I suspect a lot of closeted ex-Muslims like me also, and these fucking moral police are making our lives even harder. So yes, Muslims are the true victims when the government is becoming more Islamicised, because non-Muslims are not subjected to Islamic laws.

Be sad for me.  Cry Cry Cry

Not that I like Black Eyed Peas though.  grin12

Sounds like the Malaysian government was trying to do Muslims a huge favor here.

Anyway, they ended up reversing that decision on September 3.

    to apostacize

    to openly apostacise

I always use the word 'apostatise'.  I assume that is the correct verb. grin12

This is good!! My friends tell me that is is not because the Muslims cannot have fun, it is because the company..Guiness i believe, that is sponsoring it wanted to sell alcohol at the gig . The company also had a contract to NOT sell alcohol there. The concert in itself was to try and boost the economy through tourism. My friends said that they had tickets but found out the the company was going to promote alcohol and advertise it as well. They refused to go.. Afro

The government was looking out for the muslims, by not allowing then to spend money on tickets while promoting alcohol/alcohol products, etc. Thats the take I got from friends yesterday... Afro

Whoa. This thread made me drastically change my view of Malaysia. I thought they were chilled out Muslims. Apparently not.

Shit, even in Iraq, we haven't done such a thing. A southern province outlawed alcohol last year but there was a huge backlash against it which forced the governor to amend the law. The amendment meant the ban only included bars and public drinking but allowed private drinking and liquor stores to remain legal. They also made exceptions for Christian/Sabean clubs/community centers.

It still sucks but this is Najaf we're talking about, probably the most conservative province in the country. And there was still a backlash. Hmm, maybe Iraq doesn't rank among the conservative Islamic countries after all !

Yeah, and there was a public outcry, so in the end, they reversed the ban.

It's actually quite often that we get international acts to hold concerts and gigs here, and sounds like they were trying to ban this particular concert for Muslims because the concert was sponsored by Guinness, so there'd be lots of free booze around.

Hmm, they don't outlaw alcohol here. It can be found easily everywhere. But if you're a Muslim, and you drink in public, better watch your back for the moral police. Non-Muslims can do whatever the fuck they want.

There are many more cases where these raids would’ve cause deaths, and we are sure there are many more to come.

Moral police is an oxymoron of the deepest kind.

Yep, that's what I've been saying, the government is getting more and more Islamicised.  Cry It's more like "liberal Sharia law" though Roll Eyes because their jurisdiction is limited to imposing fines or/and imprisonment to not more than 6 months. They have these separate religious authorities who hunt and raid nightclubs and such, but there's a lot of bribery involved fo sho. Disgusting people.  tickedoff

Sharia law plays a relatively small role in Malaysian legal system as a whole though because Sharia courts only deal with personal matters for Muslims. But it's a worrying trend to see more and more people get persecuted by them.  Cry

    @Buttersnips

Cheers for the site! Wow, that's really good to see more rational Malaysians around. Looks like the team behind the site are mostly Malays, too. Wow. Maybe there's hope for Malaysia, after all.
