  • Are state-funded faith schools immoral?

    >education.letters@guardian.co.uk

I think there are plenty of UK Muslims here who should write to the paper and explain why religious schools are bad for society.

Very insightful article. Humans are very predictable in their discriminations.

What is interesting is that, because countries like England have always been predominantly Christian, having individual faith schools hasn't created social friction. Now, with the world more globalised and people of all different religions living next to eachother, it would seem more important than ever to break down the barriers that religion creates, I wonder what a society would look like in 100 years where faith schools are becoming even more popular and religious friction seems more noticeable. It seems like slowly building up segregated societies in one big city, and it all starts with the children...

Exactly!  Just like in Northern Ireland where initially you had loyalists and republicans who hated each other but now their children hate each other, why would that be so when most of these children surely are not into politics?  Because they were taught that those other people are "different".

Faith schools have only really been an issue in Britain in Northern Ireland, where an existing historical social crisis was in some ways exacerbated or reflected in the stratification of education along sectarian lines. Jewish schools have been in existence for a while, but the Jewish community has been integrated very well into society so it didn't really make a difference

The economic and demographic profile of a city can have an effect on all this. My worry is that in small towns or cities like the northern milltowns, separate schooling will be catastrophic in the context of societies that are already deeply segregated, and a Muslim community is already quite insular. That really, really concerns me.

To anwer the question , they are beyond immoral , they are centres of cerebral abuse  ,

oh and sorry for seeming like a pedant , but there is no such place in my mind as Northern Ireland , only the north of Ireland, dont use the language of the invaders Wink

According to the polls only 1.6 % of Americans are athiests. So what gives you the right to call the other 80% morons?'

Thats fine. You can do what you like in your mind, thats the great thing about that solitary space where our imagination dwells.

In the real world, Northern Ireland is what it is.

    Immoral? Nah.

Faith schools generally score extremely high on results. At least they are good for something

If you want to teach your kids fairy tales that is fine, just don't use my money to do it.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

Don't fund any private schools and pump the money into the state system. You have a ridiculous situation in Australia where a private school student receives more government funding than a state school student. That's completely fucked.

Muslims in the UK are not here
for "refuge" - what cheek! Many are
here because the UK needed highly
    skilled personnel and manual
    labour.
    Many Muslims are here because
the UK has set fire to their
homeland. If you set fire to your
neighbour's house they will come to
    shelter in yours. Don't
    attack/dominate Muslim nations and
Muslims will not bother to come to
    the UK - simple!
British Muslims are suffering from identity crises. The young generation has
lost its cultural  and linguistic identies. They find themselves cut off
from their cultural roots and are unable to enjoy the beauty of their
literature and poetry. They do not know where they belong.British education
system is responsible for the Identity Crises of the Muslim children. If a
child suffers from identity crises, he/she is not going to develop
    self-confidence and self-esteem.

Bilingual Muslim children need state funded Muslim schools with bilingual
Muslim teachers during their developmental. There is no place for a
non-Muslim child or a teacher in a Muslim school.

There are hundreds of state and church schools where Muslim children are in
majority. In my opinion, all such schools may be opted out as Muslim
    Academies.
