General Hi!

Hi there,

My name is laura; i am not muslim but i encounted this site during my research into the different sides of islam.

i dont really have alot to offer but i would just like to say to all those people out there who have left islam at the risk of everything how much i admire you. It takes a lot of guts not just to leave but to be able to stand up and shout why.

i am australian and have noticed the influx of muslim immigrants to this country. Most, i have to say, are quite nice people who just want to get on with their lives; others not so much.

The change in the population is what has lead me to learn more about Islam as i want to understand why people are against/for it. so far, like many other religions it appears very polarizing.

Im still learning more of both sides and cant wait to read everyones different stories..

i hope you can all just put up with me if i ask a stupid question!!

welcome to the forums!

what religious beliefs do you currently hold, if any(out of my own demented curiosity i ask this)?

also i don't know what it means to be for or against islam. ideally, if religion wasn't an issue or was non-existent, i think we'd have a lot less bullshit to deal with but i don't know whether that makes me 'against' religion. i don't think it's viable to expect people not to be religious, let alone to expect people not to be muslim. i disagree vehemently with islam and the repression of apostates such as myself and many who post here. so i suppose in the sense of my position i am 'against' islam, but i bear no resentment for its adherants, except those who'd want to kill me.

What religious belief do i currently hold?

unsure at this point, but secular humanism is looking good at the moment. i considered myself christian when i was younger but i never really felt "close to jesus" as so many other people claimed to, so it never really properly felt right. there is not specific religious dogma that i could say i adhere to except for maybe the "Golden Rule".

I suppose my point to joining this forum was to attain an understanding of Islam from an ex muslims perspective. i hear christians/secularists/athiests etc opinions, i also have a beautiful friend who is a muslim who has told me about islam from her perspective (i guess you could describe her as a liberal muslim). but not since now have i heard from an ex muslim and these insights are becoming more interesting as i keep reading.

Hey, welcome to the forum Lauz. We can provide you insight but as long as you are willing to hear criticism on all other religions as well. Most of us are all atheists, agnostics or deists. I refused to talk to my christian coworker who was bashing islam, because all I would have ended up giving him is something to gloat on and how is his religion better etc..

Has there really been such an influx of muslims to australia? Last time I was there I saw very few muslims, mostly east asians.
