  • Let's Analyze and Assess a Statement
     OP - October 06, 2011, 08:41 PM

"The only way to experience a comfortable and pleasurable period of existence is from the accumulation of money."

comfortable - relatively free of negative externalities like pain, stress, uncertainty

pleasurable - full of positive, life enriching experiences

money - currency, savings, liquid assets, etc.

I know we've got some good philosophers here. Let's have some fun assessing this statement's validity!  Afro

I hate to point out the obvious, but.. 'the accumulation of money'?

Is the focus of the statement on the process by which money is accumulated? I only ask because such processes might be anything but comfortable (even if they may be pleasurable).

    I would say instead:

The only way to experience the value of a lifetime of accumulating money is through expressing comfort and pleasure. Others your wealth is useless and you were better off a poor man or dead.

Would you say that this is the case because of the peculiar human way we do things, or is this a stronger claim that for any member of civilization to have pleasure is to engage in some form of trade with the rest of their species?

I don't think trade itself is a necessarily pleasurable activity, nor does it necessarily lead to either pleasure or comfort. So I would have to go with the former reasoning. Humans exchange value mostly through monetary interactions. This seems in part to be due to the way in which trade and currency as a facilitating mechanism have evolved.
