  • Scarface or Goodfellas?
     OP - October 18, 2010, 11:43 PM

Alright, let's sort this out once and for all. Cool

    Scarface...

    ...or GoodFellas?

Both are great films of course, but I want to see what the CEMB community thinks... for research purposes. And Godfather is not included, because, it just isn't.

I actually voted Goodfellas even though I haven't watched it yet. I have watched Scarface and while it's awesome in a freaky kind of way and I worship Pacino, I can't imagine it winning again a Deniro/Pesci/Scorcese combination.

Yeah, I can't believe I haven't watched it yet, either. Soon, soon.

Both are awesome movies. But Goodfellas has to be the one. Better acting, better script.
But for anyone who hasn'see both or one of these movies, don't get us wrong, you NEED to watch them both.

Goodfellas is far more superior as Scarface only really has novelty value. Both great films though!

Incoherent Al-Pacino killing motherfuckers is fun, but that's all it is; fun. Goodfellas has far much more depth within it from my point of view. Though I might be missing something, and I certainly don't mean to say that Goodfellas is God's gift to earth either.

For me, Scarface is the better film. Put me down as one of those people who don't 'get' GoodFellas, but for me people who praise it as being more introspective whilst Scarface as being more about the one-liners and 'novelty factor' are missing the big picture.

Tony Montana represents, for me, the iconic Tom Sawyer character for our modern generation -- that rebel inside all of us who wants everything at all costs.

What makes Scarface my favourite gangster movie all time is the performance of Pacino, portraying the eccentric Cuban refugee who manages to make such an evil man more human, unlike any other movie character at the time, from the first scene when he bluffs his way through the interrogation to when he finally loses his grip on reality.

And of course, Scarface is also about the dark side of capitalism -- ("You know what capitalism is? Getting fucked!").

And okay, it does also have its novelty factor and one-liners, but that's what DePalma was going for -- he wanted to make his movie iconic.

One of my favourite dialogue scenes from Scarface:

Hector the Toad: So, you got the money?
Tony Montana: Yep. You got the stuff?
Hector the Toad: Sure I have the stuff. I don't have it with me here right now. I have it close by.
Tony Montana: Oh... well I don't have the money either. I have it close by too.
Hector the Toad: Where? Down in your car?
Tony Montana: [lying] Uh... no. Not in the car.
    Hector the Toad: No?
Tony Montana: What about you? Where do you keep your stuff?
    Hector the Toad: Not far.
Tony Montana: I ain't getting the money unless I see the stuff first.
Hector the Toad: No, no. First the money, then the stuff.
Tony Montana: [after a long tense pause] Okay. You want me to come in, and we start over again?
Hector the Toad: [changing the subject] Where are you from, Tony?
Tony Montana: [getting angry and supicious] What the fuck difference does that make on where I'm from?
Hector the Toad: Cona, Tony. I'm just asking just so I know who I'm doing business with.
Tony Montana: Well, you can know about me when you stop fucking around and start doing business with me, Hector!

     Cheesy

To all the people who voted for GoodFellas: I hate you.  bullshit

Look, maybe the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, but it's pretty clear the "parts" of GoodFellas are better than that of Scarface:

Direction-- Look Scorcese's gonna smack down DePalma any day of the week, this is a guy regarded by many as being the best American director of the late 20th century.

Cinematography-- The long tracking shots used by Scorcese in GoodFellas are widely regarded as being among the best ever done. Contrast this with the end shootout scene in Scarface where it's obvious DePalma either got so lazy or so overbudget that he starts repeating frames.

Acting-- Okay, he's the one part where you might be able to make a case for Scarface, as Pacino owns the fuckin screen in a way that the lead actor, Ray Liotta, in GoodFellas just doesn't, but if you're including ALL the actors in the film, GoodFellas still clearly wins, because it's Liotta, Pesci, DeNiro, and Sorvino vs. basically just Pacino. I mean you can't compare Steven Bauer to Paul Sorvino, ya know-- and this holds true for the rest of the supporting cast.

Dialogue-- GF's dialogue is clearly more thoughtful than SF's

Plot-- SF's plot was cliched, simplistic and unoriginal. GF's plot was much more ambitious and daring. Contrast the endings-- Tony Montana dies in a hail of gunfire just like the end of countless gangster movies that came before and after it. Henry Hill ends up a snitch and in the Federal Witness Protection Program, which was very much new for its time-- before that in gangster movies the lead gangster always ended up dead or in prison, mostly the former.

Mise en scene-- Similarly, along with the plot and dialogue, the overall mise en scene in GF was more complex and ambitious than SF. In Scarface you saw Tony's life, which aside from him being Cuban and a cokehead, offered little novel in the way of the gangster movie cliche (poor guy gets rich from criminal activities and lives in opulence, gets the femme fatale, then collapse under the weight of his own ego and extravagance), but in GoodFellas Scorcese recreates an entire subculture of New York mafiosi for the viewer to vicariously experience (which is what the scenes of "Italian guys eating spaghetti" you sarcastically dismissed earlier were all about). Arguably GoodFellas does this even better than The Godfather did.

Look, I love Scarface, and do not think its popularity is unjustified by the artistic worth of the film itself, but GoodFellas is the better film, hands-down.

I agree with many points you have made, and you have clearly analysed them in more depth than I have.

One area I disagree with is acting. GoodFellas was a strong ensemble main cast, but it needed a stronger leading man. Liotta was overshadowed by Pesci, who stole every scene he was in. For me, Pacino's performance is a case for quality over quantity.

And yes, Scarface does offer an overly simplistic character arc, the story has been told before, but never to the level of sheer power and audacity as was offered up in this film. It didn't try to be too complex or clever, it's strength lies in its simplicity.

GoodFellas, whilst brilliant in its own documentary style (which makes sense considering the book Wiseguy was based on a true story) loses me with the spaghetti-eating scenes and the lack of a single definitive plot thread -- I suppose this is what frustrates me the most. But I do understand it was about seeing the "layers" of the Mafia and understanding the lifestyle better... Meh, perhaps I need to rewatch it.

For me, the best scene in GoodFellas is towards the end:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D_4eSiLFA_o

Being a kinda paranoid guy to begin with and knowing the feeling, from back in the day, of being super coked-up and extra paranoid, the scene just fuckin nails it.

    Goodfellas.

I've watched that film countless times and I never get bored of it. I feel like watching it again.

    Scarface... bored of that now.

My favourite scene in Goodfellas is Jimmy's killings...

With layla's piano theme belting out, Ray Loitta's narration, and the timing of the doors opening - I find the scene... Strangely beautiful.
