  • Had pork for the 1st time
     OP - July 15, 2012, 06:15 PM

While on work placement this past week i went to this Chinese place in Leeds called Wokon and thought i would try the chili combo meal which consisted of all the meats inc pork. I have to say it was nice but i wasn't all what have i missed all my life about it.  Saying that, it leads to what i want to ask cause while eating it i got weird body reactions to it and im just wondering why is that?

I assume it's something to do with the fact of me eating mainly halal meat for most of my life and now the fact ive tried what is known as haram food might have triggered something. If i had more of this would my body become tolerant of it?

Not sure if other ex muslims had this same feeling once they 1st exposed them selfs to the non halal meat?

Might just be eating at the buffet mate! Those Chinese buffets tend to use a lot of additives and stuff that can give you a reaction if you're not used to eating them. I love them myself but you do sometimes get that eating out.

And the Chinese buffets do tend to make all the meats kind of taste standardised, sweet and sour chicken and sweet and sour pork you can barely taste the difference!

Either way, good to hear you are enjoying life and experiencing new things  Smiley

Thanks mate, i think im going to eat these stuff a bit more liberally. This would be hard at home though for obvious reasons but i don't think it was cause of the buffet cause i have been to others before, whether it was cause it was halal might be a debatable matter.

    What Billy said.

If you really want to taste pork, go to a decent pub and order a pork roast. Or just go to your local M&S and get a pork belly or a pork loin roast and cook it yourself. Their sticky pork belly is decent.
If that's too much work, just get a ham and cheese pizza.

Fuck forgot about bacon. It's all about the bacon man. Just find a burger van or one of them breakfast places and get a greasy bacon roll. Heavenly! . If you can't find one just get a bacon roll from greggs although it won't be as good.

It could be the chinese food aspect, there are chemicals in it that can make some people have physical reactions.

Now about the chilli part, you might eat chilli (hot) food all the time, idk, but personally, if I tried to eat chilli or something with chilli in it these days I'd probably have a bad reaction... which is weird 'cause when I was a kid I used to eat chilli off the bush (and have a crazy story about going to the toilet after eating a chilli and not washing my hand beforehand - resulting in a very sore bottom), and I kind of over-dosed on chilli and ever since then have hated it, won't touch the stuff. But saying that, you probably eat chilli all the time dunno.

It could be purely psychological. People can have psychological reactions to something if they've been conditioned to fear (even if you think it doesn't really affect you any more) it, especially from a young age. Physical reactions can come from having a psychological reaction...

Well actually i eat hot stuff all the time with no problems. The bad reaction was just my tummy feeling odd and just thought might be a 1st time of trying something thats all.

Could be a bad batch (mild food poisoning), sometimes some food is left out too long in take away stores, or sometimes people don't wash their hands before preparing it and other shit.

I bought a grand angus with a friend recently, and we both had bad reactions to it, we both think maybe mild food-poisoning as we've never had that reaction from eating a grand angus from Maccas before.

I know what you mean about your tummy feeling odd. I grew up eating pork and then didn't eat much of it for years and years. Now I eat it much more frequently again and don't have any problems with any of the cured or processed pork products, but pork chops just make me feel odd. I think they're just too rich or something.

Think the more you have it the more the body is used to i think. Could try it again and see how i feel.

Sorry, you have been seriously indoctrinated!

And to the OP, monosodium glutamate can get those sorts of reactions.
