Meccan verses being pacific / Medina verses being violent

On the whole, is this true? That the earlier verses where Muhammad was beset with people who he couldn't fuck with, he encouraged gentleness and 'no compulsion in religion' etc, but in the later verses, where he had power and an army, this completely went out the window and in comes 'if a man changes his deen, kill him'
Of course there may be crossovers - some peaceful verses in Medina, and some violent ones in Mecca
But as a rule, is this true? I have heard a lot of people say that it is who know better than me, but I seem to remember Hassan saying this wasn't the case in one of his videos, so I'm doubtful..
