    On one level, this kind of thing is totally stupid and arguably unethical. On another level, it fukn rocks. Draw your own conclusions. grin12

    The America's Cup race is one of the oldest and most prestigious yacht races in the world. In other words, it's always been a playground for filthy rich bastards with huge bank accounts and bigger egos. Despite this, it has managed to produce some coolness over the past century and a half. This year it's on again (happens every four years or so) and they decided to liven things up a bit by introducing a new class of boat to race with.

    The result is 72 feet long, weighs around 7 tons, and in a normal sailing breeze will get up and boogie on hydrofoils, giving a top speed up around 50 miles an hour. This is, IMHO, pretty bloody impressive stuff and would be great to watch live.

    Inevitably, somebody is going to get it wrong and flip one of these at top speed. That should keep the punters entertained. whistling2

    Meh. Those are just the little training boats, not the real thing. Everyone started with a 45 foot class, just to play around with the basic idea, so what you're seeing in those vids isn't what is going to be raced. So, at the moment the top teams each have several of the real thing being tested against one another, and the Pommy team is still on training wheels. They haven't got a snowball's chance in hell.

    Sounds like a lot of clever engineering goes into making those boats.  Hopefully one day that engineering will give birth to some technology that saves the planet. parrot

    Oh the engineering is quite fascinating. I wouldn't rely on technology to "save the planet" though. No matter what technology you throw at the problem, people will still be able to fuck the planet if they don't get their acts together.

    The other way around I think. Since there is no chance whatsoever of people getting their acts together, our only hope of saving the planet is through some technological McGuffin.
