  • What?s a 'Cultural Muslim'?

I would argue that author is likely more culturally non-Muslim than culturally Muslim. The occasional mumbled prayer or ritual response to a sneeze does little to require the broader label of “cultural Muslim.”

I think we're just dealing with definition labels here.
But from my view... that is pretty much all culture is... at least as it is talked about by most people.  It is a very shallow thing.  The set of rituals and responses and activities tied to a group.  Someone might be *really* into their culture. Others just casual.
Some adhere to the values of their culture. Others just live in it.
And we all belong to a multitude of cultures.

I'm a  cultural Muslim that same way I would consider many people to be cultural Sikh/Hindu/Christian
In the same way that I would be a cultural Canadian just because I like Hockey.

I personally know two cousins who said they don't feel things add up. One stopped questioning and kinda just lives as a cultural Muslim, the other is in Uni and has admitted to me he doesn't fully believe in a lot of stuff. Another takes certain stories as metaphorical. I've started calling bullshit to most things. Floods, talking ants, no place for human evolution etc etc.

Don't read all those science books bro, you'll just get more confused.

That's funny. The more science I read, the less confused I get.

Perhaps a cultural Muslim is one who when all said and done still wants an 'islamic' burial, for cultural reasons rather then religious ones. Like mentioned previously I think it is to do with age and your environment. I reckon most intellectuals or should I say thinkers (born in Islamic religion) smell something fishy about Islam around puberty to about the late teens. If your environment provides an alternative lifestyle, like if your Swedish girlfriend asks you to leave UK to move to Sweden to sorta forget about family, friends and football (before Sky)the chances are losing your culture is easy. But if you decide to toe the cultural line, live amongst your kith and kin, it's not a hard balancing act if you are heterosexual male you are on your way to becoming a cultural Muslim.

    Fact is stranger than fiction.

I am my own worst enemy and best friend, itsa bit of a squeeze in a three-quarter bed, tho. Unhinged!? If I was a dog I would be having kittens, that is unhinged. Footloose n fancy free, forced to fit, fated to fly. One or 2 words, 3 and 3/thirds, looking comely but lonely, till I made them homely.D
