An article in New Scientist comments that Islam does not consider plants to be alive, because the ban on pictures of living things does not extend to plants.
Is that argument correct?
No, plants are comprised of cells which are living organisms which reproduce by asexual reproduction. Cells absorb nutrients and expel waste just as anything other complex organism does. Some plants has both female and male sex organs which produce the same type sex cells found in humans. However this makes these plants hermaphrodites due to having both organs. Other plants reproduce asexually and/or by pathogenesis like lizards do. Plants are among the most common forms of life which far outnumber mammals, birds, fish and reptiles.
