4 dead, at least 14 injured in suspected Vienna terror attack; shooter dead,
others possibly at large Six crime scenes were under investigation. Austria's chancellor condemned it as a "hideous terrorist attack."
Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said that initial investigations indicate that the suspect who was killed had sympathized with the Islamic State group, according to the news agency. He declined to elaborate, citing the ongoing investigation.
Police said that the suspect's apartment has been searched, and police were evaluating numerous videos. The incident began at about 8 p.m. (2 p.m. ET) Monday when at least one gunman opened fire near Vienna's main synagogue. The synagogue was closed and unoccupied at the time.
Witnesses said the gunman fired randomly into bars and cafes which were crowded on the last night before a nationwide lockdown because of the coronavirus. The gunman was killed by police within minutes.
Two men and two women died in the attack on central Vienna on Monday night that the Austrian interior minister blamed on an Islamic State sympathizer, the only known attacker who was shot dead by police, Vienna's police chief told a news conference on Tuesday.
The dead attacker was a 20-year-old Austrian-North Macedonian dual national who had a previous terror conviction. At least one more suspect is still at large, but Austrian police said on Tuesday morning that two more suspects had been arrested in the town of St. Poelten, around 60 km (40 miles) west of Vienna.
