The Ninety-Nine

Has anybody seen these comics?

This is a comic about ninety-nine superheroes, based on the ninety-nine names of Allah in the Quran. Many of the heroes are women, and many of the women don't wear hijab, a fact I appreciated.

Apparently the guy who started this project got hold of the same artists who work on the Marvel and DC Comics to draw these characters. Impressive! I think it's a great progressive Muslim project and I might invest in a couple of the comics.

I saw this last year through some site I now don't remember and thought it was an awesome concept. Ideologies can't be made to just disappear, they can only be replaced by new ideologies so any rewriting of old mythology or reimagining of old religions, I'm all for. As long as it's updated with our growing understanding of the world. It might not be a perfect endeavor (from what I remember there is a tendency in this comic to blame the west for a lot of the problems, just like real Muslims are taught to do), but it's a step in a good direction because at least it shows a slightly different way of looking at the world (female heroes along with male, self empowerment, etc). And the visual art is pretty cool.
