  • Help on hadith or story look up please
     OP - April 15, 2009, 06:23 AM

Im currently arguing with a few Muslim ladies over why exactly Muslim women are "supposed to" prayer in their homes. They just keep saying that its a "superior prayer" and we shouldnt even bother ourselves to pray in the mosque. But I know at some point I read a hadith or story in which an elderly lady found it difficult to get to the mosque for each prayer...so the Prophet allowed her (and by default all elderly people in general and also mothers with young children or sick etc) to remain in the home and perform prayer  there. So he said something along the lines of "prayer performed in the home by women is superior  then in  the mosque" ...but he was referring to the elderly and mothers of young etc.

Anyhow...Im arguing with the women that its not compulsory for women to pray in the home...it was just a mercy to them or something...based on that story...but they think I made it up. (that I am in fact lying  finmad )

I cant find it...anyone wanna give me a hand here....thanks

I am not exactly sure, but I was always told that women should not pray in the masjid on fridays because they need to take care of the children. Well, atleast that is what the muslims told me. I know my help is kinda crap, but I hope I helped Afro

My books are at home. When I get there I'll share what I find. I think there's a hadith that's similar to a saying of Jesus in the NT, "It's better to pray in your closet", but twisted so it's better just for women to pray in the closet Grin.

I chose to get circumcised at 17, don't tell me I never believed.

If it's superior to pray at home then why pray outside of the home at all?

Because one of the subsequent Khalifahs was an atrociously fundamentalist shit, and didn't like women in the mosque. He was also the one who stopped non-muslims entering Makkah, and most likely introduced the penalty of stoning for illegal sexual intercourse, with subsequent ahadith retconned to the time of Muhammad to legitimise them.

I realize that women CAN pray at home etc...Im looking for the story about the old lady who complained about the difficulties etc...and the Prophet then allowed women and the elderly to remain at home for prayers...if they CHOOSE to...not that its compulsory etc.

Aziz...thanks for the article...but it doesnt tell the WHY of it...just that it is superior etc.

    Anyhow...still searching.

    thanks all
