    http://www.timesofmalta.com/articles/view/20090502/local/muslims-gather-in-prayer-along-sliema-front

About 50 Muslim men took their prayer rugs to the Sliema front yesterday after the planning authority sealed off their place of worship. The Muslims said the Malta Environment and Planning Authority had locked them out of their flat in Sliema where they used to pray, so they decided to take their cause outside.

"We are not here to protest or threaten violence but to express our fundamental human right to gather in prayer," Bader Zina, one of the leaders, said. According to Mepa, a number of complaints had been received by neighbours and the flat did not have a licence to be used as a place of worship.

The Muslims, many of whom Maltese, were dressed in traditional clothing. They had a permit and police protection and said this might become a regular appointment until their flat was reopened.

This behaviour did not go down well with a group of Maltese onlookers who warned that if this happened again "there will be trouble".

"Malta is a Catholic country. They have no right to come here and pray in front of us. I don't care what they do in the privacy of their own home but not here," one Maltese woman said.

"We've had enough. If you were to do the same in their country they would stone you. I can't understand how they could have been given a permit for this, including police presence and all!" her husband added, visibly disturbed by what he saw.

"They should go to a mosque. That is where they belong. Or in some hole somewhere. But not here where I get my children to eat and have a good time. I would have had no problem if they were Catholics praying... in Malta we are all Catholics so it's not a problem, but not them. Even the tourists were disgusted," he claimed, as his teenage son nodded in agreement.

The owner of a nearby kiosk said she had no problem with them and some were her friends and clients. But she acknowledged that their presence lost her a lot of business yesterday. She said they should be allowed to remain in their flat where they would not be disturbing anyone.

Another man said the praying did not disturb him and it was less noisy than he would have thought. "I don't see what the problem is. These are Maltese people with a different religion. Why shouldn't they be allowed to pray quietly outdoors if we can have noisy feasts and drunken brawls?"

Mr Zina said they did not want to anger anyone: "All we want to do is praise God".

He said that besides the Sliema flat, another in Buġibba had also been locked up by Mepa simply because it was used by Muslims to gather in prayer. The residents of the flats had to seek alternative accommodation.

"Since when do you need a licence to pray? I don't see anyone closing down other prayer groups. And, anyway, I would rather have a group of Catholics singing praise to God next to my house than a bar," Mr Zina said.

He explained that Muslims prayed five times a day and it was preferable to do so in groups. He did not sense a negative reaction from the Maltese in the area, except for one woman who insisted on walking her dog in front of them. When she tried it the second time, she was stopped by the police.

He said it was sad to see some Maltese Catholics who feared or were intolerant towards Muslims and efforts should be made to encourage tolerance and integration.

Although he condemned any type of violence or revenge, he said that if people were discriminated against and hurt, it would become impossible to control a backlash.

Malta is one of the most devout European nations.

What would happen if Jews,Hindus, Buddhists & Wiccans took to such prayers on Saudi's streets?

Doesn't fucking matter, Saudi is wrong for their intolerance, that doesn't give Malta a free pass just because Saudi does it! 015

    What he said.  yes

    However this:

    Quote

is utterly typical of Muslim spokesmen. The implied threat of violence if they aren't going to be highly regarded. They really need to learn to drop that rubbish. Threats like that will only make people like the Maltese less tolerant, because it reminds them of their history when they were beseiged by Islamic fleets.

True, but as Osmanthus said, Malta had a terrible history with Islam, its somewhat natural to be defensive. Saudi won't last without its foreigners, I dunno how essential these Muslims are to Malta, if they're like the Muslims in the rest of Europe, they might well be poorer, more prone to crime & contributing precious little while demanding loads.

These Muslims come to a country which they had a history of oppressing, & issue threats of violence if their demands aren't met! finmad

Lets insult a whole country based on the actions of some fools in local gov-sounds like teh thing to do! El-concepto of Christian nations is as funny to me as muslim nations and scientologist nations-hoooooowever-I have to find myself in agreeyance with the above oster-peys. The issue at foot is not that serious, there are about 150 countries in the world all doing far worse travesties to human rights and other individual rights. If you want to protest about somethin serious, it is available to you yet you have chosen upon something not even worth reading!

Malta is on the gates of Europe type area. The citizens are diverse in genetics ranging from German genes even to minute amounts of African genes and pretty significant Middle Eastern (Phoenician, Moorish, Jewish etc) genes. Its the only European country that has a semitic language! Semitic!!! It has uneasy tensions with marauding invaders, now, not suggesting that modern-Islamocommunity equals invaders, but the Catholic mentality is what has been needed since the Moors first saw that piece o land as eye candy.

Furtherbut, this piece is propo-ganda. "Look at what the big bad kaffir is doing to our sheep-innocent Muslim ikhwan who suffer in kaffir land!!!" I come to question where it was you saw this! The justification of future muslim riots clause at the end is somewhat unreasonable

You spent, let's say, in total, 20 minutes reading, posting and commenting on this story yes? If you were to proportionally and fairly spend a proportionate time talking about what Saudi Arabia does (believe and trust me on this one, please), you would need to spend days and days and days finding, posting and commenting on stories. Yet, you choose a relatively small and crappy article about some building being shut down

Seems to suggest something somewhat about one's agenda, does it not?

(Also-poster above is right, Maltese Muslims are new and small minorities, kuffar in Saudi, Khaleej and just about any Muslim country are the ones who give them everything they have).

I kind of agree with the guy above, it seems like a nonstory.

Basically a few onlookers said they didnt like it. In all honesty, big deal.
At worst it seems like a petty argument between some catholic bigots and some muslim exibitionists.

You obviously missed the main point. These guys had their prayer group running in a private flat and the local authorities locked the flat. More than one flat, to be specific. I suggest you read the article again.

I did, I dont know the whole story, as its not in the article, but it just doesnt seem like anything abnormal

"a number of complaints had been received by neighbours and the flat did not have a licence to be used as a place of worship". Its a zoning issue. I had an apartment where I was told I could not have pets and if I wanted to have a party I would need permission from the other residents. One time I had 15 of my friends over  to play in the pool, and I got a letter from the landlord threatening to evict me for disturbing the neighbors (and no, weren't doing naked bong hits... but that does give me an idea for next weekend)

I dont know the housing laws in Malta or the situation (were 30 people showing up at the crack of dawn waking up the other residents?) , but all and all it sounds like a simple housing issue. This happens to "home churches" often for the same reasons.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
     according to the article:

"He did not sense a negative reaction from the Maltese in the area, except for one woman who insisted on walking her dog in front of them. When she tried it the second time, she was stopped by the police. "

    Two things strike me:
    1) Like I said, nobody is oppressing them, they police did not move them from the area, and they were allowed to assemble

    2) Since it is public land, the women has the right to walk her dog in front of them, just as much as they have the right to pray.....it is public land. While she would be disrespectful, I cant see police being used to enforce something like that. When I go to the park to do Tai Chi, I cant make the police clear a nice spot for me and make those darn kids keep quite

personally, if I lived in their building, I would not complain if they had prayers there (as long as they werent doing azan at 430am or something), but since I dont know the whole reasoning behind the complaints I cant judge it well enough.

Fair enough. I couldn't see a problem with it apart from noise. If they were interfering with other people's peace and quiet in the flats I could see the residents calling the council about it. Otherwise it doesn't seem like a big deal.

I actually had to live in the same building as a "home church" in Philly... It was really annoying. They were kind of crazy though...Kind of a combination between the 5%ers and voodoo. The landlord kicked them out because the "congragation" was there so much, it had become a bit of a flop house. With this, I think it was government housing (again, I'm not sure how Malta works) in which case the city is the landlord. They are usually more strict, some government housing in the US has a lot of rules, especially with having visitors (this relates more to drug dealers and such more than anything else) government organizations are also very buerocratic, so I can see why they would get burned for holding group religious services.

The complaints may be unfair (as in, the only reason the complaints were made was because it was muslim, and would have been ignored if they were catholic), but that is like my neighbors would ignore me if I blasted Frank Sinatra as opposed to Pennywise.

Why go out of your way to scare people like this? I dont get it, especially given the current international context.

I wouldn't want to see Christians, Muslims, Jews, Scientologists, Fuckentologists, God or even R.Dawkins himself converting a landmark in the city I live in, into a personal temple.
