  • Philosophy!

Guys, who has studied philosophy here or is fairly well read in the subject? What did you read and do you think it had an impact on your apostasy? Or was the Quran and Hadith enough to sow the seeds?

i took an intro course in college and was fascinate by the subject. we're talking some 20 years ago. it probably did have some impact on justifying my position on religion. the most intriguing topic for me was solipsism. the book we used was "what does it all mean?" by thomas nagel. don't know if it's still in print but i highly recommend it. it's short (100 pages) and very thought-provoking.

i have the book right in front of me now. anyways, chapter 2 on solipsism starts with this: "if you think about it, the inside of your own mind is the only thing you can be sure of." then it goes on to describe how it's possible that everything, your body, your friends, your car, your senses, and the whole universe might just be your mind running the whole show.

sort of an eerie feeling to think that this whole thing could be just a figment of your imagination and you're all alone in the universe making things up as you go. could go mad if you ponder it too much.

I study Philosophy and Ethics and it had a impact on my views.

I recall learning about the inconsistent triad, problem of evil and my teacher would grade us on debating and i had to argue against a omnipotent omniscient omnibenevolent God.

And the topic of miracles, oh my. God can show himself to some girl and heal her for some flu (a story in L America) but cannot cure aids where millions are dying?

So yeah. It had a impact and i still thank my teacher to this day.

Blind faith is an ironic gift to return to the Creator of human intelligence

The subject fascinates me and I'd like to read more. I've read Bertrand Russell's "Why I'm Not a Christian" and Nietztche's "Beyond Good and Evil." I didn't like Nietztches style though. I'm reading Andre Comte-Sponville "The little book od atheist sprituality". I've nearly finished it and should have it finished this evening. I've also got "Language, Logic and Truth" by A.J Ayer which I'm looking forward to reading. I wouldn't mind reading Jean Paul Sartre or Ayn Rand as well. Please advise.
