It has been declared treasure by South Staffordshire coroner Andrew Haigh, meaning it belongs to the Crown.

Terry Herbert, who found it on farmland using a metal detector, said it "was what metal detectorists dream of".

It may take more than a year for it to be valued.

Anybody see this on the news last night? Gold from Byzantium and jewels from Sri Lanka, obviously the Dark Ages weren't that primitive after all.

Of course they weren't that primitive. That is why the term "Dark Ages" is not widely used anymore, because of what the term implies.

They're mainly just the "Poorly Documented Ages".

Did the person who found them with a metal detector get remuneration or just plain out confiscation of this magnificent find?

Pretty Much yeah. That, and the "Dark Ages" was also a bit of a slur to big up the renaissance.
