According to the Oxford English Dictionary it did & still does?

    quote:

    Quote
The term atheism originated from the Greek ἄθεος (atheos), meaning "without gods", which was applied with a negative connotation to those thought to reject the gods worshiped by the larger society.

It was never meant non-belief in Gods but rather a rejection of particular concept of God.

Even Chrisitans were accused of Atheism because they denied the God of their Ancestors.

It was only in the 18th Century that people came to regard themselves as "atheists" which is non belief in Gods.

    Are you disputing the OED?

I assume that quote below is from Wikipedia as it was not referenced.  I note just before that quote in Wiki it  says "Atheism can be either the rejection of theism, [1] or the position that deities do not exist. [2] In the broadest sense, it is the absence of belief in the existence of deities. [3]"

    Do you dispte this too?

I am saying this not what it meant in the past.

In the past atheism meant a rejection of a particular concept of God. In Socrates case it was the Greek Pantheon. For early Christian it was rejection of Roman Pantheon.
