  • Chapter 105
     OP - March 14, 2010, 10:57 PM

It's only 5 verses, but it's a comedy all in itself...

    1. Did you not see/understand how (what) your Lord made/did with the elephant's owners/company/ friends?
    2. Did He not make their plotting/conspiring in misguidance?
    3. And He sent on them flying/birds (in) flocks/groups gathered and following each other .
    4. It throws them with stones from dry and hardened mud.
    5. So He made them* like eaten husk/chaff/leaves.

So an army attacked Mecca, with elephants. The people of Mecca offered no resistance because the army was too big and powerful, so Allah sent birds carrying stones and hard mud and got them to drop them on the army, and they got pulverised so badly that they resembled eaten leaves.

    W T F ?  Cheesy

I don't come here any more due to unfair moderation.

I don't understand either. Atleast Allah's punishment on the people of Saleh was cool. A giant soundwave like thing which destroyed everybody and no trace, but they still got those odd houses. I don't know if a tribe named Thamud lived there, but beats birds carrying stones and dropping it on people.

Oh no, you DO understand it, it means literally what it says!

    Quote from: Al Kathir
This early Makkan Surah refer to an event that happened in the
year of birth of our Holy Prophet, say about 570 A.C. Yemen
was then under the rule of Abyssinians (Christians) who had
driven out the Jewish Himyarite rulers.
Abrahah Ashram was the Abyssinians governor or viceroy.
Intoxicated with power and fired by religious fanaticism, he led
a big expedition against Makkah, intending to destroy the
Ka'bah. He had an elephant or elephants in his train.
But his sacrilegious intentions were defeated by a miracle. No
defence was offered by the custodians of the Ka'bah as the
Army was too strong for them. But a shower of stones, thrown
by flocks of birds, destroyed the invading army almost to a
man. The stones produced sores and pustules on the skin,
    which spread like a pestilence.

    It's just utter bollocks Cheesy

At least the stones producing puss sound cool.  Kind of like the fiery hail in the Bible.

So once again I'm left with the classic Irish man's dilemma, do I eat the potato or do I let it ferment so I can drink it later?

    What?

A mass-invasion of elephants being repelled by a flock of birds that throw bricks as projectiles sent by the creator of the universe Himself?

    What's so whacky about that?

I wonder if there is any historical evidence for this invasion?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Year_of_the_Elephant#Events

Is the seerah and Quran pretty much the only evidence of the invasion? I believe it's true Abraha actually existed and there was abysinnian christian rule in parts of yemen. But any real world evidence for this invasion? I dunno.

Iblis has mad debaterin' skillz. Best not step up unless you're prepared to recieve da pain.

The verse is not to be taken literally. It's an obvious reference to aerial bombing/cruise missiles.

    What's so whacky about that?

    Exactly!

    Quote
Abraha's elephant is supposed to have refused to cross the boundary of Mecca and sat down. It could not be persuaded otherwise, either by reason or violence. The accounts state that if the elephant was turned towards Syria or Yemen it would walk without hesitation, but when it was turned towards the Kaaba it would kneel on its knees as if it would adore the city that its master was intent on destroying[verification needed]

Sometimes the small things make me laugh.  Like the "verification needed" at the end of the passage

I heard somewhere that the whole elephant battle was a myth. Not sure where I got it from, but maybe it is.

lol. Maybe there was "some" battle, but not the way the Qur'an says it is.
