o.O' Salafis aren't fond of Suyuti and Qurtubi? I've seen otherwise... The Noble Qur'an (hilali/khan), their favourite English translation is said to quote from Qurtubi (and Tabari). They make a number of exceptions for shuyookh (sheikhs) who were fit of the label 'salafi', Qurtubi, Tabari, Suyuti, and most def. Ibn Taymiyya and his students Ibn Kathir and Ibn al Qayyim, etc.
This was the very thing that made it slightly incoherent. Firstly, it hearkening back to the first three generation and saying they got it right, but then with the same stroke making these exceptions. What made medieval vibrant was it's difference of opinion, which is the reason why you had the four schools as well as many other. Though, those four schools were exclusively sunni islam. ;-)
