Need advice for buying a domain name

A friend of mine needs a website setting up. I've never really brought a domain name before so could use some help on finding the best deal. Can anyone help?

There are tons of registrars, just pick one. I recommend you register with someone other than your host. Don't pay more than 10 USD per year for a .com.

I've used http://www.cheap-domainregistration.com/ in the past and have been very happy with them. They offer full control over your domain so you don't have to wait for their admins to set stuff up for you. I'm sure plenty of other registrars offer the same service as well.

I'm trying to decide between website hosts, I found these two good ones:

http://byethost.com/free-hosting
http://www.000webhost.com/

Which should I go for? I probably wont reach the limit on bandwith/space for either one of them so those don't matter. They're both free too.

I cant see much of a difference really.

Good call Peru. Ratings/reviews are the first thing I look for, since generally people only tend to write reviews if they have a problem. Nobody feels like taking the time to write a review for just decent service. So if they actually have good reviews then they are probably pretty darn good.

Exactly I've signed up for it, seems good so far. The VistaPanel looks easy enough to use. Wont get to properly test it 'till I finish uni and get to work on the site.
