  • Looking for a Hadith
     OP - April 22, 2010, 01:50 AM

    Hullo.

I believe I have read about a Hadith where Mohammed (the alleged prophet) says that if he does/says something that contradicts the Quran, you should disregard his action and follow the Quran.

What Hadith is this? (If it exists at all).

It's quite an important point, because it's basically a confession that even the supposed role model of all Muslims is confused by and unsure about the Quran.   Afro

Bukhari 62:142 - Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet used to pass by (have sexual relation with) all his wives in one night, and at that time he had nine wives.

I hope you can forgive me for bumping this topic.  Smiley

I'm not aware of a Hadith like this but do remember a hadith about Muhammad giving some advice on Date palms and it turned out to be wrong and he said something like 'take my advice in matters of religion but when it comes to dunya I am like you" or something like that.

Thanks! I suppose it doesn't exist then, and I'm just confusing with something someone told me once.

Muslims often say that if a hadith contradicts the Qur'an then it is false, because Muhammad never contradicted the Qur'an (according to them) - maybe that is what you are thinking of.

This is often used by those who want to reject nasty hadith.

But the fact is Muslims will often interpret hadith in different ways and if they want it to agree with Qur'an, they can make it agree and if they want it to contradict - they can do that also.

There is no doubt in my mind that Muhammad contradicted himself many times in both Qur'an and Hadith.

I assume you're not confusing it with abrogation - the concept that in the quran the later medinan versus supercede the earlier meccan ones

No, I am familiar with abrogations. Not the kind of thing I would expect from an unchanging, infallible God though.  Wink

Yes, I think you are right.
